' BRIDLE.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,141, dated March 3, 1885.
Application tiled January 15, 1885. (No modell) To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MONROE WERKHEISER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phillipsburg, in the county of Varren and Sta-te of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheek-Pieces for Bridles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-V tion of the invention, which will enable others 'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of a bridle provided with myiinproved cheekpiece. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it with the blinker removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line w x, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cheek-piece, showing the several pieces separated.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre` spending parts in all the Iigures.
My invention has relation to cheek-pieces for bridles; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a cheek-piece in which the blinker may be removed orjnserted at will, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA. indicates the cheekstrap, which is doubled at its upper end for the reception of the buckle B, into which the billet of the crown-piece C is buckled, while it is stitched together at its lower end and provided with thestrap D, into which the bit is secured in the usual manner, the ends, which are stitched together, being separated by an interposed piece, E, of strap, so as to forni a slot or recess, F, in the upper portion of the doubled cheek-strap for the reception ot' the inner edge ofthe blinker G.
The portions of the cheekrstrap whichY form the sides of this slot or recess are provided with registering perforations H, and the edge or iiange I of the blinker, which is placed between the said sides, is likewise provided with perforations J, which register with the perforations in t-he sides, and headed screws K are inserted into these perforations, having their heads bearing against the inner side of the cheek-strap and having their threaded ends projecting beyond the outer side of the cheekstrap. Rectangular loops L t upon these projecting ends, with perfor-ations M in one of their sides, securing the flange of the blinker in the slot formed by the cheek-strap, andthe billet of the crown-piece passes through these loops, preventing them from turning upon the screws, and thus becoming loosened, while at the same time the loops coniine the billet. A block, N, consisting of a piec'e of strap, has a number of perforations, O, registering with the perforations in the sides of the loop of the Cheekstrap, and may be placed into the loop or slot when the blinker is removed, serving to hold the sides of the said slot in position, or may, when the blinkerisin place, be placed upon the projecting ends of the screws within the loops, underneath the billet of thecrownpiece, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. It will thus be seen that the blinker mayr be removed or inserted at will, making the bridle convertible from an open bridle to a blind bridie,77 or vice versa, and it will also be seen that if the blinker-stay by use is torn from the blinker in such a manner thatit cannotbe stitched to the blinker again, the blinkers from both sides may be reversed and changed to the opposite sides, when another corner of the blinker will be presented for the securing of the stay.
For the purpose of enabling the blinker to iit in both cheekstraps, the ends of the iiange` of the same have a notch, P, into which the eye of the tongue of the buckle Bmay fit, and the insertible block N is likewise provided with a similar notch, Q, in one end, for the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a cheek-piece for a bridle, the combi nation of a cheek-strap doubled at its upper end to form a slot or loop having registering perf'orations in its sides, a blinkerhaviugperi'orations in its inner flange registering with the perforations in the sides of the slot, the s aid flange fit-ting in the slot, and screws fitting in the perforations of the slot andblinker, and having means, as shown, for securing them, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a cheek-piece for a bridle, the combination of a cheekstrap doubled at its upper end for the retention of a buckle, and formed IOO ' bearing against the inner side of the cheekstrap, loops having a perforation in one side fitting upon the threaded ends of the screws, and the billet of the crown-piece secured in the buckle at the upper end of the cheekstrap and passing through the loops upon the screws, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination, in a cheek-piece for bridles, of the cheek-strapdoubled to formaloop or slot at its upper end, having registering perforations in its sides, a block or piece of strap having perforations registering with the perforations iu the sides of the slot and fitting within the said slot, headed screws fitting in the perforations of the slot and block, loops having perforations in one side fitting upon the threaded ends of the screws, and the'billet of the crown-piece passing through the loops, I
as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in
