HAM E-TUG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,947, dated May 28, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELI B. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hame Tugs, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in hame-tugs; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a hame-tug embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view ofa portion of the base-plate with the strap and buckle removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the buckle attached.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the base-plate, which is increased in thickness at its front end and provided with an eye, B,which is adapted to be engaged with a hook or staple on the hame. (Not shown.) An opening, 0, is formedin the rear end of the base-plate, through which the front end of the trace-strapD is passed, and in rear of the said opening are arranged lugs or projections E E, having rounded or beveled front sides.

In front of the said lugs or projections the base-plate is channeled, as seen at F, and this channel is extended forwardly to form a pocket, G, and H H represent a flexible loop, (preferably of leather,) the ends of which are fitted in the said pocket. Apertures h 71. are formed in the sides of the loop,which register with an aperture, f, in the base-plate, and a pfn or rivet, I, engages the said registering apertures to lock the loop in place on the baseplate.

K represents the buckle, the tongue-bar Z: of which is engaged in the loop H, and the tongue L of the buckle engages perforations in the tracestrap, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

As above described, the trace extends through the opening 0 in the rear end of the tug, from the inner side, and therefore the rear end of the buckle is pressed tightly against the base-plate by the tension on the trace, and the rear or closed end of the loop bears against the front sides of the lugs or projections E E, thus bringing the rearward strain of the buckle on the said lugs or projections and relieving the loop entirely there from. The function of the loop is to hold the buckle in place on the base-plate and prevent accidental displacement thereof; but it may be dispensed with, in whichcase the tonguebar of the buckle will bear directly against the lugs or projections. The tongue, as will be seen, passes between the lugs or projections.

M represents a keeper arranged in front of the channel and formed integral with the baseplate, its function being to receive the front loose end of the trace and hold the same in contact with the base-plate.

- Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a hame-tug, the combination of the base-plate provided with an opening, C, and having lugsE E adjacent to the said opening, and the buckle connected pivotally to the bar in rear of the lugs and arranged over the opening and having its tongue-bar engaged with the lugs or projections and adapted to be engaged by a strap passing through the opening, substantially as specified.

2. In a hame.-tug, the combination of the base-plate provided with lugs or project-ions E E, the loop secured to the base-plate adjacent to the lugs or projections, and the buckle having its tongue-bar engaged in the said loop and bearing against the said lugs or projections and adapted to be engaged by a strap, substantially as specified.

3. In a hame-tug, the combination of the base-plate provided with a pocket, G, and the lugs or projections E E in rear of the pocket, the loop II, secured by a rivet or pin to the base-plate and fitting at its free ends in the said pocket, and the buckle having its tonguebar engaged in the closed end of the loop and bearingagainst the said lugs or projections in position to be engaged by a strap, substantially as specified.

4. In a hame-tug, the combination of the base-plate provided at its rear end with an opening, C, lugs or projections E E in front of said opening, the channel F in front of the lugs, and the pocket G, the loop fitting at its free ends in the pocket and provided with apertures which register With an aperture in the base-plate and are engaged by a pin or rivet, and the buckle having its tongue-bar engaged in the loop and bearing against the lugs or projections in position to be engaged by a strap, substantially as specified.

5. A hame-tug consisting of the base-plate provided at its front end With an eye, B, and having the opening 0, and the lugs or projection s E E, recess F, having opening f, the loop H, seated in the recess and connected by rivet I, and at its rear end the buckle mounted in the loop and having its tongue-bar engaged with the lugs or projections E, and its tongue extending between the same, and the strap extendingthrough the opening 0 and engaged with the buckle, substantially as specified.
