Description
J. W. G. SMITH.
PACKING BOX.
No. 310,091. Patented De. 30, 1 884.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WV. G. SMITH, OF PITTSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO SYLVESTER S. MARVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,091, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed June 21, 1854. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. G. SMITH, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Box for Packing Cakes or other Articles liable to Crush or Mash, of which the following is a specification.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed IO out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is avertical crosssection showing how the partitions are supported. Fig. 2 isahorizontal section showing the partitions turned vertically in the pockets.
Fig. 3 is a detail viewin elevation of a locking-rod in its bearings. Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation, showing rear open bearings which support the pivots of the partitions.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in elevation of the partition with its pivots. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section showing a modification of the locking device. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are detail views showing modifications of devices for locking and supporting the partitions.
In the drawings, A representsarectangular box having cover A, the latter being made fast to the former by the covenringc andthc boxpin a.
B are partitions having rear pivots. b b,
0 which work in the bearings c 0, arranged upon the vertical plates 0. The latter are parallel to the back of box A and extend out farther and farther therefrom toward the bottom, so as to form pockets for the reception of the several 5 partitions, which are thus placed compactly together, side by side, and in a vertical position, when not in use. The bearings c, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, are open at the rear and have the top edge overlapping the bottom one, so that in raising the partitions a person may not inadvertently pull them out, and sothat when raised they will drop by their own gravity into their respective pockets.
D are rods having lateral studs or projec- 5 tions (1, bearings d, and a handle or bent up per end, (1", so that when the rod is turned by the fingers the stud (I may hold down the partition on its supports.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I show fixed pins or studs a, to support the partitions B, the pins being attached to the box, while in Fig. 7 I show the studs a on a fixed rod, D.
In Fig. 6 I show both the supporting and locking rod arranged to turn, while in Figs. 8 and 9 I show both the supporting and locking studs on the same rod, which of course is arranged to turn.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a'full understanding of my invention, what I desire to protect by Letters Patent is specitied inthe following:
1. In packing-cases, thecombination, with partitions provided with rear pivots, b,ofbearings c 0, open at the rear to allow the partitions, when raised, to escape into the pockets.
2. In packing-cases, the plate 0, arranged parallel to the back of case, and at an in creasing distance therefrom as they approach the bottom, to make a pocket i'or'each partition, and all said pockets arranged side by side in a vertical position.
3. In packing-cases, the sidestudded rods D, arranged to turn and lock the front of partitions on theirsupports, to allow the boxes to be turned either end up without bringing the pressure of one layer upon another.
