ROBERT T. PENIOK, OF ST, JOSEPH, MISSOURL IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-PACKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113$,H73, dated November 19, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT T. PENIGK, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Packer, of which the following isv a specification:

My invention has for its object to'furnish an improved device for packing bottles and packages of bottles in sawdust, short shavings, rice-husks, 850., and which shall correctly and uniformly regulate the space between the bottles, and between the bottles and the sides of the box in which the bottles are to be packed, and at the same time shall be simple in construction and convenient in use; and it consists in the packer constructed as hereinafter more fully described, and in the combination with said packer of one or more catches.

ness equal to the space required to be left between the bottles and the sides of the box or case A. The interior of the packer B is divided'by partitions 2) into as many compartments as there are bottles or packages of bottles to be packed in the case A, the form of said compartments being regulated by the shape of the bottles to be packed. The thickness of the partition I) should equal the space to be left between the bottles. The sides and ends and the partitions of the packer may be made solid or hollow, or in the form of aframe or open-work, as may be desired, and said parts may be made of any desired height, and all of the same height or of different heights, as may be desired. The ends of the packer should project upward to serve as handles, or should have handles attached to them, for convenience in operating said packer. In slots or recesses formed in one or both ends of the packer B are pivoted one or more catches, O, in such a way that their lower ends may be projected to rest upon the edge of the case or box A, to partly or wholly support the packer when pouring in the sawdust, and that said lower ends may be moved into their slots or recesses to allowthe packer to be moved up and down within said case. In using the packer enough of the sawdust to cover the bottom of the case A to a suflicient depth to receive the bottles is poured in and leveled down. The packer B b is then inserted in said case and a bottle or package of bottles is placed in each compartment of the packer. The packer is then raised and the catch or catches 0 moved out to rest upon the edge or edges of the case A, and a quantity of the sawdust is poured upon the tops of the bottles, part of which findsits way down into the spaces between the bottles. The catch 0 is then drawn in and the packer is pushed down to pack the sawdust between said bottles. The packer is then raised to allow more sawdust to enter the said spaces, which is packed by again forcing the packer down. In raising the packer care must be used not to raise it above the shoulders of the bottles, and thus allow the said bottles to get out of place. l/Vhen thespaces around the bottles have been filled the space in the case A above the bottles is filled with sawdust and leveled off, and the case is ready to receive its cover. When the sides, ends, and partitions of the packer B I) are'made hollow the sawdust is allowed to pass down through said cavities. In this case a .frame may be used to press the sawdust down through said cavities. This construction can only be used when the spaces around the bottles are wide and the sawdust or other material is very fine.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A11 improved packer, B b, for packing bottles and packages of bottles, consisting of the sides, ends, and partitions, whether said parts be solid, hollow, or of open-work, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination of one or more catches, G, with the packerB Z), substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
