UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. SHELTON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
PACKING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,100, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed April a. 190i. herialNo. 54,591. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. SHELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of packing-cases for glassware; and the objects of my invention are to provide a packin g-case of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts, whereby glassware may be readily and effectively packed within a comparatively small space. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in elevation of my improved packing-case with one side thereof removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 66 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the case with the top removed. Fig. & is a plan view of the bottom frame-tray; and Fig. 5 is a detail view, in perspective, of a portion of the upper packing cover-plate.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a box or case of which 1 represents the vertical connected sides, 2 the bottom, and 3 the top. At the junctions of the sides of the casing 1 I provide vertical strengthening cleats or standards 4C, and the upper end portions of these corner-cleats are connected by transverse upper and lower strengthening bars or cleats 5 and 6.
In the drawings I have shown my improved packing-case as adapted to contain electriclight globes or other bowl-like bodies. In
supporting the lower one of these bowl-shaped bodies, which is indicated at 7, I provide a bottom packing-frame, which consists of two transverse frame-bars 8, which rest upon" the bottom of the box 1 and which have secured to their upper sides separated and parallel horizontal frame-boards 9, each of the latter having its inner edge portion provided with a curved recess 10. The edges of these recessed portions have secured thereto radially the corresponding ends of packing-points 11, the pointed terminations of which are adapted to be bent downward, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The paclo ing-points 11 are preferably formed of strawboard or similar yielding material and the partially-circular seat formed by these radiall y-arran ged packing-points is adapted to receive and support the dome or rounded end portion of the lower bowl-like body 7. This being accomplished, I place upon the upper side of the lower body? apacking tray orframe comprising united frame pieces 12, which form a frame adapted to fit within the casing 1, saidframe having secured to its under side a strawboard plate 13. Secured to the under side of this plate 13 is a second strawboard section or plate 15, the latter having an opening therein corresponding with the opening 14 and having projecting inwardly toward the center from the edges of said opening pointed tongues 16, these tongues being adapted, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to be bent downward into the mouth of the bowl.
The packing-tray is further reinforced by an under side strawboard plate 17, which, as prescribed for the plate 13, is provided with a central opening. This lower strawboard plate 17 adjacent to its central opening bears upon the rim of the next lower bowl '7. It will be observed by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the end portions of the framebars 12 are recessed, as indicated at 18, these recesses being adapted to receive the frame corner -pieces 4. By successively inserting the glass bodies 7 so that their rounded or dome portions are seated inthe openings 14 and against the tongues 16 and arranging the packing-trays upon the rims of-the bowllike bodies 7 the packing-case is filled until the rim of the upper bowl-bodyis adjacent to the top thereof. Upon this top bowl-body is "placed a packing-cover or top plate 19,0f strawboard or similar material, the latter having secured thereto at desirable points transverse wooden cleats 20, the extended end portions of which are adapted, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 5 ofthe drawings, to fit into top recesses in the box or casingsides. The packing operation thus-being completed, the coverboards 3 of the' case are secured in their positions on the top of said case.
By the above-described operation it will be seen that glass articles similar to those herein described may be quickly and safely packed and that the means employed for supporting and seating said articles are such as to prevent the glass surfaces coming into contact with each other and to assist in retaining said articles in rigid positions Within the packing-case.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a packing-case for glass and similar Ware, the combination with a box-body 1, of a lower supporting-frame in the bottom of said box and consisting of horizontal frame-pieces 9 having inner edge recesses and packing points or tongues projecting therefrom, packing-trays adapted to fit and be inserted within said external case, each of said packingtrays comprising a frame and a filling of strawboard or similar material having a central opening and packing-tongues 16 projecting Within said openings from its edge portion and a cover for said packing-case, substantially as specified.
CHARLES L. SHELTON. In presence of-- C. O. SHEPHERD, P. S. KARSHNER.
