Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12,1906.
Application filed March 18, 1901. Renew d anu ry 25. 1906- eri l N 7. 7
Zo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BRoWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Richland, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Packages for Butter,of whic the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in packages or tubs for preserving butter and for similar purposes, it being very well adaptedfor the preservation of any articles which it is desire to preserve and protect from the variations of temperature of the outside atmosphere.
The objects of this invention are to provide a receptacle of glass, porcelain, or other suitable material which is supported wi thin a tub in such a manner that there is an air space entirely surrounding the same with a minimum amount of contact with the exterior of the tub, so that the air shall serve as completely'as an insulator or protector as it is possible to do in ordinary circumstances. I accomplish these objects of my invention. by the devices and means described in this specification.
The invention is definitely pointed out and described in the claim.
The structure is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved butter tub or package. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line corresponding to lines 2 2 of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View taken on line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the bottom support being shown in full lines. Fig. 4 is a plan View of a rectangular package made according to my invention, the covers being removed. Fig. 5 is a transverse detail sectional elevation of the modified structure, taken on a line corresponding to line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is a tub, age which is provided with a suitable bottom N, whichiits air-tight within the same and has a tight-fitting cover B, which is hinged at (J and provided with a beep D and a suitable catch D on the side of the tub on the 0 site side. Where the tub or package is of pail, or other exterior pack-- ppo- largesize, I also provide on the top of the same hooks E at intervals between the hasp and the hinge. Also when the tub or package is large it is desirable tobrace the to by cross strips or cleats B B. Handles are provided at the sides where the package is arge, and it is needless to remark that on smaller sizes a bail can 'be provided or the handle omitted, for that matter, entirely.
Within the tub or casing I rovide a lass jar G, although such jar mig t be Ina 'of porcelain. This is provided with a suitable cover H, having a cross-cleat H in the large sizes, with a gasket between it and the top of the jar G. In the bottom of the tub or package I place a piece L, supportedon helicallycoiled springs M M, one end of whichis secured to the ottom and the other end supporting the cross-piece L. In the smaller sizes the cross-piece L can be omitted and a singlehelically-coiled spring placed at the center.
Around the outside of the ar or inner case.
and secured to the sides of t e tub or ackage A are other helically-coiled springs lo cated at intervals entirely around the 'ar, so that it is supported by springs at su stantially an e ua distance from the walls of the tub or pac age all around.
The cover H for the jar or inner package G I usually make of Wood, though it'also m1 ht be made of glass or other suitable material,
On the cover B of the tub or package I lace other helically-coiled springs J J, whio are adapted to rest against the cover H, whichis held securely in lace by springressure. Between the cover fiand the ar G, place a gasket I of rubber or other material suited to the pu use. I
It W1 1 be observed from this arrangement of the parts that the jar or inner package is sup orted entirely separate from the outer pac age by coiled spr1ngs. It of course presents a very small conducting-surface to conduct heat to or from the inner packege.
The number of springs can be increased or diminished'according to the size of the pack age, it only being necessary to distribute them in such a manner that they go entirely around the same.
The springs J retain the cover in place and ,also retain the package in position. -The packageis thus supported so that 1t is re-' jolts, Whichwould be likely to break the same. It is also supported so that it is practically entirel surrounded by an.
eved from all In Figs. 4 and 5 is il ustrated a rectangular or cubical ackage having a series of inner crystal pac (ages which arese ar'ated from each other by a suitable frame and are designed to hold butter in roll form or in prints, as it is called. The frames between the sections permit'the inner casings to be supported as though they were a single case, as in the structures appearing in Figs. 1 and 2. From this statement it is clear that the structure can be somewhat modified without de arting from my invention.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a package of the class described the combination of the outer tub A provided with helically-c0iled springs secured on all sides there of and to the bottom projecting inwardly, an interior jar or receptacle G resting on the B, to rest against the cover H on the jar 25 within, whereby the inner jar or receptacle is supported by the said springs in such manner that it can freely move in any direction by the mere compression or expansion of the springs. 0
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in thepresence of two wit nesses.
