Description

UNITED STATES CHARLES L. GILBERT,
OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TELESCOPIC CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,488, dated April 29, 1902.
Application filed February 4, 1901. Serial No. 45 807. (N0 model-) ranged as to admit of said case being separated into upper and lower compartments and to produce certain improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the sections of my improved case, showing the same slightly separated and for the sake of clearness showing the central section broken away. on one side; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of said central case-section.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ an upper telescope-section 1, which is in the nature of a box, the upper closed side of which may be provided with a suitable handle 2 and binding-straps 3. r
4 represents the central section of my improved case, said section, as indicated in the drawings, being in the nature of a rectangular frame, the side and end walls of said frame being connected centrally by an internal partition-plate 5, the edges of which are suitably united with the inner surfaces'of said side and end walls. In constructing this section 4 I preferably provide the under side of the intermediate partition or floor 5 at desirable intervals with transverse strengthening-strips 6, the latter being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and one of the same being shown in full lines in Fig. 2. While these strips are shown as extending completely across the under side of thepartitionplate or floor 5, it is obvious that they may simply be in the nature of angle-strips, which embrace the upturned edges and adjacent portion of the partition-plate.
The central section 4 is adapted, as will readily be understood, to be received or in- .cased by the slightly larger upper section 1, while the lower portion or compartment of the central section 4 is adapted to receive a somewhat smaller bottom section 7, which latter is in the nature of a box-like body, having its upperside open. The sections 1, 4, and 7 being thus united, it is obvious that the same may be" strapped firmly together through the medium of the straps 3.
From the construction which I have shown and described it will be seen that not only is a telescopic case produced comprising a plurality of sections, but that the same when united forms, through the employment of the partition-plate 5, upper and lower completely-' separated compartments. In order to permit the partition-plate 5 being formed of the same or similar material as that employed in the construction of the bodies of the sections and at the same time prevent the sagging of said partition-plate through Weight or pres sure of the contents of the upper section, I have provided'the transverse strengtheningstrip 6, which may be produced of any convenient or desirable form.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A telescopic case comprising a framelike section 4 having a fixed central partition 5, an upper section 1 adapted to receive said section 4 and a lower section 7 adapted to be inserted and incased within the section 4 beneath the partition thereof and straps for uniting said sections, substantially as specified.
. 2. In a telescopic case, the combination with a frame-like section 4 having its upper and lower sides open, a fixed horizontal partition Wllihlll said section and metallic strengthening-strips on the under side of said partition, of an upper case-section 1 adaptedto-receive said section 4, a lower'box-like section 7 adapted to be inserted within thelower portion of the section 4 and mea'ns'for uniting saidsections, substantially as specified.
