FRANK J. PALICA, OF RACINE, VISCONSIN.
. TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,247, dated April 8, 1890. i Application tiled November 14, 1889. Serial No. 330,824. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK J. PALICA, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the Stat-e of blisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to trunks; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of lny improved trunk, with parts broken away. Iiig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, also partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a central vertical transverse section broken away at one corner, and Fight is adetail of a modified construction.
The trunk in the preferred construction is of generally rectangular shape when closed, but with its ends d a beveled or inclined inward at top and bottom, as shown at. b c, to 'enable the trunk to be bound with continu ous metal or other strip, arranged diagonally from corner to corner, or all around the trunk. Thus, as shown in Figs. l and 2, two iron straps d e will be sufficient to entirely bind the trunk-body, crossing on the back f and lying straight with the described beveled top and bottom portions b c of the ends, with their meeting ends at the center of the front g of the trunk preferably mitered, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and all secured together and to the said trunk-front g by an shaped plate 7a. There may be, if desired, a similar plate il on the back of the trunk; but, as stated, (and shown in Fig. 2,) the straps are there preferably crossed and not cut. When desired, wood strips maybe employed instead of band or hoop iron straps, as shown in the detail view, Fig. 4, where 'c represents a section through one of the beveled bottom portions of thetrnnk end, and f asection through the back of the trunk, and d cl wood strips substituted for the corresponding strap d and united at their adjacent ends by a short metallic binding-strap (l2.
The top j ot the trunk is shaped like an inverted open-bottom ed box having a rear downward iiange le, downward end flanges m m, and downward front flange n., the ends of the latter flange being beveled to correspond to the diagonal .straps or strips e d, the front g of the trunk being out away between said strap or strips at a line which meets the bottoni line of said top front n, and above this line along the upper line ot' said strap or strips to the ends of the trunk-body, as best shown in Fig. l. The said top is preferably bound or bordered by a lnetallicstrap or straps o, the lower front portion o of which forms a balance, as shown in said Fig. l, while the rear iiange'c of the trunk-top ts within an d against the back f of the trunk-body, so that the top proper is iiush with the top of said body-back f, as bestshown in Fig. 3, and secured thereto by a series of hinges p jp p, whereby when the trunk is against a wall, for instance, the top may be raised without moving out the trunk or pulling it forward, and when the top is closed it is shut within the trunk, except at the front portion, and hence the closed trunk has four solid corners at the top, and the trunk-top is not liable to become injured or loosened by knocking about or rough handling, as an ordinary trunktop would be.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a trunk., the combination of t-he body having top andbottom beveled ends with protecting straps or strips passing continuously around said tru11k-body from corner to corner diagonally on the front and rear and lengthwise or" the said end beveled portions, substantially as set forth.
2. In a trunk, the combination of the body, cut out at its upper front central portion, with a top having downward rear side and front flanges fitting within said body, the rear iiange of the top being parallel with and fitting closely against the rear wall of the trunkbody and hinged directly thereto, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of XViSCGnsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. PALICA. Titnessesz J. E. DODGE, M. EAGER.
