SPECIFICATION forming of Letters Patent No. 664,549, dated December 25, 1900.
Application filed. August 14, 1900. serial No. 26,809. dilo model.)
To all whont 't may conccrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN KIMBLE CARLTON HOBBS, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have in vented an Improvement in Butter-Boxes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved construction of boxes which are especially designed for the transportation of butter. It is desirable in the Construction of such boxes to form adust-tight joint between the cover and the upper edge of the box on which it closes, to provide strong and loosely-jointed hinges about which said cover may be opened, said hinges being of such a nature that they will not be easily injured or destroyed by the corrosive action of salt contained in the butter, and, lastly, to provide a means for fastening the cover when closed in such a manner that it may be securely locked and at the same time easily unlocked without danger of losing the fastening devices.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the box. Fig. 2 is alateral central section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the hinges.
In carrying out my invention the box A, which is of sufficient depth to receive the rolls of butter, is formed with a centrally-disposed upwardly-projecting rib, as at 2. The cover 3 has a rim around its periphery projecting downwardly to a suflicient depth to permit of a groove or channel4, which is made in it of such depth and slape as to fit snugly over the rib 2 of the box. This rib or bead is preferably rounded upon the top, and the channel 4 is of similar shape, so that when the cover is closed the two fit snugly together, and there is a ledge exterior and interior to the rib on the upper edge of the box, as shown at 5, upon which the corresponding surfaces of the edge of the cover rest, so that the ingress of air and dust is eectually prevented when the cover is closed. The cover is provided with transverse cleats 6-, which stifien itand prevent its warping or twisting out of shape.
In order to attach the cover to the rear edge of the box, I have shown hinges, which are formed as follows:
7 is a stout strap of metal having screwholes by which it is Secured vertically upon the rear vertical side of the box. This strap has a wide-open eye 8 formed upon its npper end and projectiug just above the rear edge of the box and parallel with the rib 2 of this portion.
9 is a strap adapted to be screwed upon the top 3 of the box, bent at right angles at the rear edge, extending downwardly and having the bottom bent to form a loop 10, and this is clasped around the upper bar of the eye 8, which is formed upon the strap 7, fixed to the box portion. This allows the cover to be freely turnable about the hinge thus formed, and the parts of the hinge are sufliciently large and loose so that the channel 4 of the cover will easily engage with and disengage from the rib 2 when closing and opening the box, and no injurious binding or corrosion can take place which will prevent the proper engaging of the parts.
-In order to secure the front part of the cover when closed, I make a deep longitudinal channel upon the front edge of the box, as shown at 11. A vertical channel 12 extends upward from the center of the groove 11 and serves to admit the hook-strap 13, which is fixed to the cover of the box, as shown, its vertical side lying fiush with the front of the box A and the inturned lower edge 14 passing down through the slot 12 and 'esting upon the bottom of the horizontal channel 11.
15 is a bolt, which may be of wood or other suitable material and is slidable horizontally within the channel ll. This channel is of sufficient length to allow the bolt to be drawn back entirely clear of the inturned end 14 of thestrap, and the cover can then be raised without difi'culty. When the cover is closed and the bolt is pushed forward, it engages the edge 14 of the hook-strap and prevents the cover from being opened.
In order to prevent the removal and loss of the bolt when the cover is opened, I have shown a plate 16 secured to the front of the box and covering the channel 11 a sutficient distance each way from the center to prevent the bolt from being removed. At the same time the endsof the bolt are accessible through the open ends of` the channel, so that it can be pushed in either direction to lock or nn- IOO lock the box. This combination of the tongue and groo.ve,on2,th'e:-box edges and rimiof the; cover, the loosely-movable uniting-hinges at the rear, and similarly loose strap and slidable bolt-fastening at the front allow sufficient movement of the parts relatively to insure the proper engage'ment of the rib and groove in closing or opening and such a meeting of the parts that the fastening can always easily be operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as--new,and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is-'- An improved butter-receptacleconsisting of a box, a cover therefor having a rim around itsperiphery and` projectingdow'n wardly said rinandthe upper edge of thebox formed with a rib andgroove joint,`hinge-plates- Secured; tothe top of the cover and bentdownwardly* over the said rim and other hinge-plates on the-boxand loosely connected with the firstnamed plates in the plane of the outer sides of the box, said box having a longitudinal groove in its front and a vertical groove or slot leading therefrom, and said cover having arstrap depending-fromits-front edgeand bent inwardly and adapted to enter said slot sothat itsbent end rests upon the bottom of the longitudinal groove, a bolt slidable in the latter groove and adapted to engage said bent end and. lockwthe cover, ,andmeansfor retaining the bolt in its groove.
In witness whereofI have hereunto set my hand. I
