SAMUEL C. HORTON AND ALONZO B. CHOI-LTE, OF ST. PAL, MNNESOTA.
BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL C. HoRToN and ALONZO B. CHoA'rn, citizens of the nited States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to an improved box and it has among its objects inexpensive construction and greater effectiveness in use. Heretofore it has been customary to construct the ends of the frame of the box out of a single piece of material. lith our invention we have provided means by which a number of pieces of material may be used at less expense owing to the scarcity of wide dimension stock.
A further object is to provide the box with a sliding cover which cannot be wholly detached from the frame and lost, said cover when closed and when the box is used for holding bottles serving to prevent the bottles breaking when the box is handled.
To these ends our invention comprises in combination the features of construction and the several parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved box showing the cover open; Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 taken on the line X-X; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the front showing the means by which the cover is locked when closed; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the combined stop and hasp.
ln the drawings A. represents the body of the box resembling a parallelepiped and having sides 2 and 3, bottom 1 and ends 5 and 6. Owing to the scarcity of wide boards each of said ends is constructed with a plurality of pieces of boards 7 which are fastened to vertical cleats S and 9 along their ends by nails 10 or other suitable means. Along the inner faces and adjacent to the upper edges of the ends 6 and 7 are horizontal and parallel grooves 12 in which the cover is adapted to slide and close the box. To prevent this cover being detached when open and for locking it when closed a combined hasp and stop C is fastened to the inner edge of the cover. This combined hasp and stop is an angle piece of metal or other suitable material suitably secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

cover, the inner shoulder 13 of which is adapted to impinge against the inner wall of the side 3 when the cover is in open posit-ion. A forwardly directed spring tongue 14 is adapted to project through a slotted` plate 15 which is secured on the inner face of the front wall 2 of the box and is perforated at 16 to receive a wire seal 17 or a lock or other suitable means for` fastening the cover in closed position. The spring tongue has an indent 22 which catches upon the plate 15 to hold the cover closed. An opening 18 around the slot 19 in the plate 15 is adapted to contain the seal and a cover plate 2O is pivoted upon the front of the box to cover the opening 18 when desired. llhen the box is used for holding bottles a crate 21 of ordinary construction may be placed therein and the cover serves to hold the bottles in the crate and to prevent them from jarring and breaking. When the cover is opened it forms a tray or shelf in connection with the box and may be used for serving bottled beverages. In this manner the cover performs the function of a com` bined cover and shelf in combination with the box. It is obvious that the sliding connection between the cover and the body of the box and other details of construction may be changed without departing from the spirit of this invention and we do not wish to confine ourselves to the exact construction described.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A box comprising, a body provided with parallel grooves and an opening through its front wall, a sliding cover adapted to travel in said grooves to close said box, a combined hasp and stop carried by said cover near its lower inner edge comprising an angle piece having a forwardly projecting resilient perforated tongue and an inner shoulder adapted to impinge against the back of the body when the cover is in open position and preventing the removal of said cover from said body, a slotted plate secured on the front wall of the body over the inner end of said opening and through which said tongue is adapted to project with said indent catching thereon when the cover is in closed position, a seal passing through said tongue and contained in said opening to prevent the cover from sliding into open position and a cover plate pivoted on the front wall of the boX over said opening with names to this specification in the presence of the seal and tongue therein; whereby the two Subscribing Witnesses. cover is ada ted to serve as a closure for the box or as a gray when open and the opening 5 in the front Wall is closed by said cover plate and the seal and tongue protected in Said VVtneSses: opening. H. L. FISCHER,
In testimony whereof We have signed our t F. G. BRADBURY.
