UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
MORRIS KOPPELMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND USNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 HOLED TITE PACKING, INC., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
CONTAINER FOR EGGS OR THE L IXE.
Application lled October 28,1921. Serial No. 511,082.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS KoPrELMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings, city and State of New York, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Eggs or the like, of which the following is a specification...
This invention relates to the packing of eggs and similar articles which are fragile or likely to be injured by jarring or contact with one another, and it is in the nature of an improvement on the invention disclosed in a co-pending application of ,Leon Mann and Morris Koppelman, Serial N o. 446,056, filed February 18, 1921.
In that application there is described an arrangement comprising a plurality of horizontally arranged members each consisting of a flat portion and portions raised above the flat portion, and having their egg receiving'openings with imperforate edges, one of said horizontally arranged members placed below and one above each layer of eggs, and the upper and lower portions of the eggs bein located in said openings, and vertical y arranged spacing andA supporting members betweenthe raised portions, said last named members extending from one to the other of the horizontally arranged members and spacing and supporting them. This combination of elements was assembled within a container, box, or casing. According to the present invention the egg-(or other article) supporting parts proper are made integral with the casing or container, extending from opposite interior walls thereof. And in one form of the invention the casing is disclosed as la folding box or carton, so that it may be shipped iiat from the manufacturer to the packer.
The present improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through a container embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same showing one end open; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken at right angles to the line of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating the subject-matter of Fig. 3 in collapsed condition and showing the expanded relation of the parts in dotted lines.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing and which, as it forms no part of the present there is shown at 6 the bottom of a box, of which the side walls are indicated at 7 and 8, and a cover'at 9. This box may be conveniently made of wood pulp or like material and ma have the general form illustrated,
invention, need not be more particularly described. Cup-like egg receiving portions, indicated at 10, are disposed in pairs, the members of each pair respectively extending towards each other from the opposed bottom `6 and cover 10 when the box is closed, Figure l illustrating how an egg, for example, is supported between opposed cup-like holders. Obviously these cup-like members may be separately formed and securely attached to the bottom and cover, but preferably they are made integral therewith in the manufacture of the box.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I show how the box may be provided with weakened or Ihinged portions 11, 12, 13, and 14, so disposed that the box may be brought from the expanded position thereof, shown .in dotted lines in ig. 4, to the full line position shown in the same figure, with the egg'receiving portions or cups in side by side relation lnstead of opposed relation, whereby the box may be brought to a substantially flat condition for shipment.
It will be evident that only one of the opposing walls of the box, for instance the bottom, may be provided with the fixed egg receiving portions, the necessary opposing cups being carried by a generally flat member which may be inserted over the eggs which have been set into the cups carried by the bottom of the box, the cover being` thereupon closed down upon the assembly.
Various other modifications may be made in the construction set forth without departing from the intended scope of my invention, which is set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A box-like container for eggs or the like, having egg receivin portions of cuplike conformation integra with and extending from an interior wall of the box, and a member having similar cup-like egg receiving portions overlying and in registry with the first named egg receiving portions.
2. A collapsible container for fragile articles, comprising article receiving seats, enclosing walls from which said seats project, said seats so arranged that seats on opposite surfaces of the container walls will occupy oppositely disposed positions when the contalner is in its article holding condition.
3. A container for eggs or the like, comprising a bo-ttom, side walls and a cover, complementary egg receiving portions extending towards each other Within the container from the bottom and cover respectively, and hinge portions in the walls of the container permitting of the collapse of the container and of the bringing of the egg receiving portions of opposed walls into side by side relation when the container is collapsed.
4. In a collapsible container for fragile articles, annular article receiving seats formed on the inner surfaces of the bottom and thecover of the container and projecting 20 inwardly therefrom, said seats being so arranged that they will occupy oppositely disposed positions when the container is in its article-holding condition, whereby each pair of oppositely disposed seats is adapted to receive and .hold an article.
5.' In a collapsible container for eggs, an nular seats formed on the inner surfaces of the bottom and the cover-of the container, said seats being so arranged that they will occupy oppositely disposed positions when the container is in its expanded and closed condition, one seat in each pair of oppositely disposed seats being larger than the other, whereby each pair of. oppositely disposed wseat-s is adapted to fit the end portions of an egg held therebetween.
lVitness my hand this 26 day of October 1921, at the citv of New York, 1n the county and State of ew York.
MQRRIS KOPPELMAN.
