Description

May 30, 1939. I T, C. WELTMER 2,160,183
ART O F PACKAGING Filed June 10, 1955 Patented May 30, 1939 ART OF PACKAGING Tracy C. Weltmer, Kansas City, Mo., assignor, by
mesne assignments, to Interstate Bakeries Corporation, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Delaware Application June 10,
Claims.
This invention relates to package containers or the like more particularly for displaying articles of food such as cakes, pastries or other bakery products.
5 An important object of the invention is to provide a display container of the class described which can be produced at a minimum cost and which will be sufciently sturdy to withstand the usual handling to which such goods are subjected while, at the same time protecting the contents both against mutilation and against exposure to the air.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description taken together with the accompanying drawing illustrating embodiments of my invention in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. l.
Referring in detail to the embodiment shown in the drawing, the body 26 may be of light ilexible material having a bottom part 21 but only two sides 28, 29, these being of greater height than that of a cake or the like superposed on the pad Si), and the sides 28 and 29, as shown, are maintained in right-angular relationship with the base 2l by the rectangular wire frame 3l having the parallel portions 32 and 33 extending along the upper edges of the sides 28 and 29, and the parallel portions 345 and 35 connecting the parallel portions 32 and 33, thus forming, for example, a square reinforcement frame extending about the upper perimeter of the box-like formation defined in part by the frame 3| and in part by the trough-like body 23.
To reinforce the body 26 and also to maintain the frame in proper relationship with the body, the frame may have a pair of depending legs 36 secured medially of the members 32 and 33 and extending downwardly rst outside the sides 28 and 2 and then through slots 31 in the sides, to abut the bottom 2l. To further secure this engagement, the sides 28 and 25 may each have an integral flap 38 which is folded outwardly and downwardly over the adjacent frame portion 32 or 33 as the case may be, and over the depending leg 35, the flap having a pair of tongues 39 which are slipped through the slot 3l, one on each side of the leg. As is shown in the drawing, the tongues 3S may also serve to maintain the pad 3) from movement away from the bottom 27 by providing an abutment for the pad upon any substantial movement away from the base, as best 1935, Serial No. 25,779
(Cl. 20S- 44) shown in Fig. 2, the pad being substantially coincident with the inner area of the bottom.
The structure shown in the drawing may be entirely wrapped in a transparent closure, as by a Cellophane wrapper or the like (not shown) in which case the wrapper is supported across the opening between the sides by the frame members 34 and 35 while the cake or the like superposed on the pad Sil is maintained out of Contact therewith but visible through these openings. Such a wrapper may be well known in the packaging art.
My improved container comprises a body of normally pliable material and a relatively more rigid reinforcement member having right-anguh larly related portions engaged with the frame against casual separation and maintaining the frame in trough-like form, the whole when combined with a flexible transparent closure providing a box-like formation through which the article contained is visible while maintaining the cake out of contact with any part of the package except the pad 3l).
It will be understood that the cake (not shown) is attached to the pad 3l] by either the adhesive eifect of the initially soft icing around the lower margins of the cake, or by a few spots of icing placed on the bottom of the cake to cement it to the pad.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A display container comprising a body of light cardboard bent to form a bottom and two sides, a rectangular wire frame having a rectangular portion dening the upper perimeter of the body and having depending legs lapping the sides thereof to engage the bottom, the body having flaps folded upon the sides over a portion of the wire frame defining said upper perimeter and secured to the body to maintain the assembly of body and frame together in box-like form.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein the sides are slotted adjacent the bottom and the legs project through said slots.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein the sides are slotted adjacent the bottom and the legs project therethrough, and the ap has tongues which are inserted into the slots one on each side of the leg.
4. The structure of claim 1 wherein the sides are slotted adjacent the bottom and the legs project therethrough, and the flap has tongues which are inserted into the slots one on each side of the leg, and wherein a pad is received on the bottom substantially co-extensive therewith between the sides and the tongues of the aps project through the slots to abut the pad upon any substantial movement thereof away from the bottom.
5. A display container comprising a flexible closure of relatively light transparent material, a body of relatively heavier material, said body being exed to form a bottom and tvvo sides only, said sides being each formed of a plurality of plies, a relatively rigid reinforcement contacting 10 each of said sides between the plies, and means including a pair of Wires connecting the sides and reinforcements at their tops and maintaining the sides and reinforcement perpendicular to the bottom, said transparent closure forming the other two sides and top of a composite box-like structure formed by said body and closure jointly, the said body and Wires maintaining the closure in position and the interior of the box-like structure being visible through the closure.
