UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. TAYLOR, or WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHURN.
BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nov 308,215, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed April 30, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Westfield, in the county of Ham pden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and uselul Improvements in Churn Barrels or Gylinders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastening devices for drawing the band tight, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
A represents the churn-barrel. composed of a series of staves, ends A, and cover 0. The ends A have the usual hearings or sockets in their centers, and are rabbeted, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a seat for the cover to rest on. The cover is provided with handles D, ventilators F F, and glass E, all of the usual con- To the upper part of the heads A, opposite the rabbets therein, are secured plates G, having handle-sockets G formed thereon. To the ends of the plates G metal straps a are secured or formed. These straps are formed or provided with pins 1) on the outer sides of their ends, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. A rectangular frame, 9, is formed with a cross-piece, g, to which is pivotally secured a button or disk, (I, that has eccentric grooves c in its under surface on opposite sides of the pivots. The ends of the bands a pass through the end bars of the frame, which are slotted for this purpose, and the pins 1) are brought into engagement with the slots c.
No model.)
By turning the disk (Z by means of the finger-lugs h the bands will betightened or loosened, according to the direction in which said disk is turned.
The barrel or cylinder is put together by placing the staves on the heads beneath the bands (1, and then turning the button at to cause the bands to firmly bind the said staves to the heads.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bands at, provided with pins 1) on their free ends, in combination with the frame 9. through the end bars of which the bands pass, and the button d, pivoted to the frame, and having eccentric grooves c c, engaging the pins 1), substantially as set forth.
2. The plate G, having the handle-socket G and the bands a formed therewith, and the pins 1) on the free end of said bands, in combination with the frame 9 and the pivoted button cl, formed with eccentric grooves e11- gaging the pins b, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the churn-cylinder A. composed of staves, of the heads A, plates G, secured to said heads, the hands a, secured to the plates, and provided with pins 1) on their free ends, frames 9, through the end bars of which the hands a pass, and the buttons d. pivoted to the frames, and formed with eccentric grooves 0, engaging the pins 1), substantially as set forth.
at. The combination, with the cylinder A, of the hands a, having pins 12 on their ends, the frames 9, and the pivoted disks d, having eccentric slots 0 and finger-lugs h, substantially as set forth.
JAMES H. TAYLOR.
