IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 75,668, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 15, 1876.

Be it known that I, EMME'IT COOPER, of Theresa, in the county of J etferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese-Presses; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a.

full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and section, of my improved cheese-press and hoop. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the hoop.

Corresponding parts in the several'figures are denoted by like letters.

This invention relates to a certain improvement in cheese-presses and it consists of two followers adjusted upon and between perforated pieces, and operated by screws with ratchets, to receive pawls or detents attached to levers, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A A refer to two followers adjusted upon and between the horizontal pieces B B, and to the upper horizontal piece B, bolted to uprights G O. The horizontal pieces B B are provided with a series of apertures or holes, b I), to permit of the upright 0 being adjusted horizontally to increase or diminish the working capacity of the press. To the inside of the followers A A are attached disks a 0), one entering the hoop D, and pressing against another disk, a therein next to its contents, and the other, a pressin g against the bottom of a second hoop, D, within the mouth of which enters the bottom of the hoop D. To hold the cloth (I of the hoop down in place while the operation of pressing the cheese is being performed, a bandager, D is provided, consisting of the rim (1 with the hoop d the rim d fitting down upon the upper edge of the hoop and cloth, and the hoop (1 around the hoop, firmly wedging the cloth in place. Hooks 0 upon the hoop, and eyes f upon the bandager, retain the latter in place upon the hoop. E E are screws, one a right and the other a left hand screw, having their bearings in the uprights O G, and so confined at their inner ends to the followers A A as to permit of rotation as they move the latter backward and forward in performing the operation of pressing the cheese. Upon the inner ends of these screws are ratchets g g, with which engage pawls or detents h, attached to levers H H, fulcrumed to said screws, and by which the said pawls are caused to engage the said ratchets and rotate the screws, moving the followers as desired.

The ratchets, having straight teeth, and the pawls or detents being bifurcated, either or both screws may be turned both to the right and left hand by the levers. Additional means, in the shape of cranks F, may be used to turn the screws.

' Having thus described my invention, what .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is

1. The followers A A, having the disks a a secured thereto, in combination with the bandager l) and hoop D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The cheese hoop having the bandager D consisting of the rim d? and hoop cl, riveted or otherwise united together, fitting upon the hoop, and connected thereto by hooks and eyes or other suitable medium, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
