Description

i I 11.: R'IKER. Quilting Attachment for Sewing-Machines. No. 217,152. Patented July 1, 1879.
11111 I ,3 nummlmn .i 1| IN 1 VENTOR 90M ATTORNEYS PETERS, Pno'ro ummaAmsn, WASHINGTON, 11c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID EIKE OF GHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN QUILTING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,152, dated July 1, 1879 application filed March 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID BIKER, of Ghattanooga, in the county of Hamilton, and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had ment of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of my invention.
A represents the stationary frame, in which the movable frame B is supported .uponrollers These rollers are mounted in the stationary frame, and the grooved side rails of the movable frame fit over the same. To the end pieces of the movable frame B are pivoted two plates, 0 0, one on the inside of the frame and one on the outer side. These two plates are pivoted in their centers, and their ends are shaped to form hooks b b, in which are hung the journals (Z of two rollers, D D. To these rollers the quilt E is attached, to be wound are equally beveled on both sides, so as to admit of the wheel turning in both directions, and also of being held stationary by a lug or pawl, e, fastened to the end of a spring, I. This spring is fastened in the center to the top of the plate 0, and its ends extend over the ratchet-wheels, with the pawls connected to them and engaging with said wheels. The wheels are provided with handles or cranks G, for rotating the rollers in either direction.
In the patent above referred to four rollers are used, two in the center to hold the work down to the machine, and one on each side for rolling up the work. I discard the two side rollers and use only two rollers, hung in swinging bearings, which construction admits of the work coming down on the bed-plate of the machine.
I have also discarded the complicated mechanisin used'for turning the rollers, and employ simply the double ratchet-wheels and spring with pawls.
With my invention the quilting attachment is rendered much more simple and vastly less expensive and cumbersome.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the movable frame B, swinging plates 0 O, rollers D D, double ratchet-wheels F F, and the spring I with pawls e c, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of February, 1879.
DAVID BIKER.
