Churn-Da shers;
Patented Feb. 18
I l l i JUNK l.
'tne s j AM PHG T0 -LITHOGI?API1IC 00. MY ossumvsls PRacsss) UNITED STATES VVIDBUR M. GOMBES, OF AUBURN, NEIV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURN-DA SHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,035, dated February 18, 1373.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR M.Gor'n311s, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the attachment of the dasher-staffs to the operative mechanism in such manner that they can be readily attached and detached; also in the general construction of the parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my churn, the box being broken open to show the interior of the same; and Fig. 2 shows a detached view of a part of the same.
A represents a boX-of any suitable dimensions provided with a vertical perforated partition, B, across the center of the box, dividing the same into two chambers, each of which is provided with a verticall y-reciprocatin g dasher, 0. Each of the dashers is made in the form of a cross, as shown, and in the center is attached a bar, D, which extends up ward through a slot in the lid E. The upper end of each dasher-bar D is cut or split downward for a suitable distance, said out terminating in a round opening, and this cut or split part of each bar forms two spring-jaws, we. The outer ends of these springjaws are beveled on their inner sides, and have each a semicircular recess at the lower end of said bevel. Each bar D is then fastened to a crank on a shaft, G, by the jaws being sprung over the crank, and said jaws are then held on the same by a clasp, b, pivoted to one jaw and clamping over the other, as shown in Fig. 1. Each end of the crank-shaft Gr has its bearing in a box formed on the upper end of a plate, H, which is slotted vertically in the center, as shown in Fig. 2, and forms a shoulder at d. The plates H are placed on the outer sides of standards I, attached one to each side of the box A, the shoulder D resting on the upper end of the standard, the slot in the plate passing over a screw or headed pin, 6, placed in the outer side of the standard.
By this means the shaft with the dashcrbars and dashers can be lifted out of the box at any time for the purpose of cleaning.
On one end of the crank-shaft G is a flywheel, J, and on the other end a small cogwheel, K, which latter gears with a similar larger wheel, L, mounted on a stud on the side of the standard I, and is provided with a crank, M, for turning the same and operating the dashers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The dasher-staffs, slotted at their upper ends, with a bore at the lower extremity of the slot and another bore to embrace the crank-shaft, and secured to the crank-shaft by a pivoted clasp, b, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the slotted dasherstaffs D D with dashers O O, the crank-shaft G, pivoted claspsb b, and removable boxes H H, all constructed as described, andarranged to be used with the churn A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1872.
WILBUR M. GOMBES.
