UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BEGKLEY, OF STILES, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,604, dated May 6, 1873 application filed March 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BEcKLEY, of Stiles,
. in the county of Davis and in the State of Iowa,
nying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a churn, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the entire churn. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the interior structure of the churn.
A represents a cylindrical vessel, forming the box within which the churning mechanism is to operate. In this box is placed a structure composed of the following parts-:-B B are two bands or rings connected by means of. four rods or bars, 0 O, of such length that while one ring rests upon the bottom of the box A the other will be at or near the upper end of the vessel A. In each ring B are two crossbars, 1) D,"through the center of which passes a vertical shaft, E, and the lower end of said shaft rests in a step formed or inserted in the bottom of the box or vessel A. On the vertical shaft E are secured any suitable number of dashers, G G, which are perforated, as shown in Fig. 1. Similar perforated dashers G G are attached to the upright rods or bars 0 0, these latter dashers being, of course, station ary, while the former are revolving. The sta tionary dashers G G form brakes, and extend as high up as the revolving dashers G G. The interior structure thus arranged is held in position so that it cannot turn by means of two pins, a at, extending upward from the bottom of the vessel A through the cross-bars D of the lower ring B, and by means of two pins or bolts, 1) b, sliding in guides on the ends of one of the cross-bars in the upper ring B, through said ring into the upper edge of the vessel, which also prevents the interior structure from moving up and down in the vessel. The lid of the vessel A is formed in two halves, H and H, the former being provided with a downward-projecting rim, d, fitting inside of the vessel, and the latter hinged to the half H, as shown, and when closed fastened by a book. 6, the central shaft E passing up through semicircular notches cut in the center of the adjoining edges of the lid. The upper end of the shaft E is made square to fit in a cogged hub, I, which gears with and is revolved by a a cog-wheel, J, attached on a shaft, K, having a crank, L, as shown. This hub, cog-wheel, and shaft are all arranged in a suitable frame, M, having two downward-proj ectin g pins or rods, N N, of unequal length, which are inserted in sockets O 0 formed on or attached to the outside of the vessel A.
To open the lid of the vessel, the frame M with the gearing must be raised until the pin N clears its socket or tube, when the frame may swing to either side on the other pin N out of the way for the lid.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the churn-box A, of the skeletouframe, composed of the vertical bars 0 O with perforated flanges G G, rings B B, and cross-bars D D, and the shaft E with radial perforated wings G G, all operated substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of February, 187 3.
JOHN BECKLEY.
