Description

M. J. DOW. OHURN.
(No Model.)
No. 411,328. Patented Sept. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEWV J. DOW, OF ALBA, MICHIGAN.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,328, dated September 17, 1889. Application filed March 5, 1889. Serial No. 301,893. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW J. DOW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alba, in the county of Antrim and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it a y pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same through the axis of the central dasher-sta'ff. Fig. 3isa perspective view of the skeleton pillar which forms the bearing for the operating mechanism; and Figs. 4. and 5 are cross-sections taken, respectively, on lines as as and 'y y of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference denote correspond ing parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of churns in which two concentric vertical dashers revolve in opposite directions within a stationary churn-body orcream-receptacle; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the churn-body or cream-receptacle, the bottom of which is provided with a gudgeon or bearing B for the lower end of the central dasher-staff, (shown at O.) The removable cover D is provided with a gas-vent E and a central circular aperture F for the insertion of the hub G. Upon the top of the cover and concentric with the aperture F is fixed by its annular bottom flange h a vertical skeleton frame or pillar H, the upper part of which forms a hollow cylinder II, closed on top and having a transverse inside diaphragm I. The upper end of the central dasher-staff G projects up through a central aperture t' in the diaphragm I and is journaled in the closed top of the cylinder. The hub Gr has a tubular shaft or extension J encircling the central staff C and concentric to said central shaft.
Upon the central shaft 0' is secured a bevel-pinion c, and upon the concentric tubular shaft J is fastened a corresponding bevel-pinion j, both of which intermesh with the cogged drive-wheel K, which is operated by a crank L and handle 1. It follows that ,wvhen this crank is turned the concentric shafts C and J will revolve in opposite d1- rections.
The central shaft or staff 0 terminates at its lower end in the paddle or dasher-blade C of the shape shown in the drawings, and having a suitable number of apertures a. The hub G, which, as we have seen, forms the lower end of the tubular staff J, has inserted into it from the under side the side pieces M M of the outside dasheig the lower part M of which conforms in shape to that of the inside paddle G which is provided with a downwardl y-proj ectin g pivot O, projecting through an aperture in the lower cross-bar N, which connects the lower ends of the sides of the outside dasher M. This construction, it will be seen, adds great strength to the dashers, which are held in their proper central position during the operation of the churn by the pivot 0 working in the central gudgeon B. It will also be seen that the bearings for the working parts are very compact and solid, occupying but little space, and at the same time presenting a very neat and finished appearance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a churn, of the sta tionary churn-body, the removable cover provided with a gas-vent and having a central circular aperture, the skeleton pillar H, terminating at its upper end in the hollow cylinder H and provided with the integral horizontal diaphragm I, the central staif O, the concentric tubular staff J, said staffs or shafts C and J being concentric with the skeleton frame or hearing II and its cylindrical extension, and the described mechanism for operating the dashers, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MATTHEW J. DOW.
