SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,451, dated August 3, 1897.

Application filed August 26, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES DOUGLAS ONEILL, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of Hanover, in the county of Grey and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourrycombs, of which the following is a specification,reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to currycombs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which comprises a suitable handle having an extension formed thereon or connected therewith to which are secured transverse plates or frames which are formed integrally with or connected with a frame in which a currycomb is mounted, said currycomb being reversible in said frame, and said frame being provided with means for holding said currycomb therein.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in Which Figure 1 is a sectional side View of my improved currycomb; Fig. 2,an end view thereof looking at the end of the handle, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invention I provide a suitable handle 5, having an extension 6 formed thereon or secured thereto, and said extension is provided at each end with cross plates or frames 7 and 8, the cross plate or frame 8 being arranged adjacent to the handle, and said cross plates or frames 7 and 8 are connected with an angular frame 9, which is preferably composed of a sheet of metal and which may be formed integrally with the cross plates or frames 7 and 8, if desired, and said angular frame 9 has the entire central portion thereof cut out between the end plates or frames 7 and 8, thus leaving only narrow side strips 10, as shown in Fig. 3, and end strips 11, as shown in Fig. 1, said frame being oblong in form and being provided with a depending flange 12 at the sides and outer end thereof.

The currycomb proper which I employ consists of a plate or a sheet of metal 13, one end of which is curved upwardly, as shown at 14, and adapted to abut against the outer side of Serial No. 603,942. (No model.)

the cross plate or frame 8, and the other end thereof being curved downwardly, as shown at 15, and adapted to be passed through a slot at 16, formed in the frame 9 at the top of the depending flange 12 at the outer end thereof. I also employ a plurality of flanges or plates 17, which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the metal plate 13 and which are secured to said plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and which extends transversely of said plate and the frame 9 and transversely of the handle 5, and said plates or the separate pairs thereof are preferably connected by crossplates 18, which are formed integrally therewith and by means of which they are bolted to the sheet or plate 13, and these transverse plates 17 constitute the combs and may be provided with serrations or teeth at their edges, if desired, and the flanges 14 and 15 at the opposite ends of the plate 13 also form combs, and the edges thereof may be similarly provided with teeth or serrations, if desired.

Secured to the cross plate or frame 8 on the side thereof adjacent to the handle 5 is a shaft 19, which is mounted in suitable supports or bearings 20, and mounted on said shaft are depending arms 21, to which are secured a plate 22, and mounted on said shaft between said arms 21 is a strong spiral spring 23, the separate ends of which are wound around said shaft and press upon said plate 22, and the central portion of said spring bears upon the endframe or plate 8, and the lower side of the plate 22 is provided with an outwardly-directed hook or projection 23, and in securing the currycomb in the frame one of the flanges 14 or 15 is passed through the slot 10 in said frame, and the currycomh is raised into the position shown in Fig. 1, the plate 22 being bolted outwardly to admit of this operation, after which the plate 22 is released and the spring 23 forces it against the end plate or frame 8, and an inwardly-directed flange or projection 24. on the bottom of the plate 22 holds the currycomb in place.

It will be understood that the currycomh may be reversed whenever desired by passing the flange 14. through the slot 16, in which position the flange 15 will be directed upwardly and will abut against the cross plate or frame 8.

I thus provide a reversible eurrycomb, and the combs on the opposite sides thereof may be provided with diiferently-formed teeth or serrations, or said combs may be smooth on one side and provided with teeth or serrations on the other; and it will be apparent that this comb is much more effectual and much more durable than devices of this class as ordinarily constructed, and it Will be evident that many changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a currycomb, the combination with a suitable handle, provided with an extension, of cross plates or frames connected With said extension, a suitable frame connected with said cross plates or frames, and a reversible comb mounted in said frame, said comb consisting of a plate or sheet of metal, having reversely-directed flanges, at its opposite ends, and transverse plates secured to both sides thereof, and said frame being provided With a slot in one end, through which one of the flanges on the comb is inserted and means for securing said comb-frame at said remaining end, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a cnrrycomb, the combinationwith a suitable handle, provided with an extension, of cross plates or frames connected with said extension, a suitable frame connected With said cross plates or frames, and a reversible comb mounted in said frame, said comb consisting of a plate or sheet of metal, having reversely-direeted flanges, at its opposite ends, and transverse plates secured to both sides thereof, and said frame being provided with a slot in one end, through which one of the flanges on the comb is inserted, and the transverse plate or frame adjacent to the handle being provided, with a spring-operated plate, by which the end of the comb adjacent thereto, is held in place, substantially as shown and described.
