DAVID V. GEORGE AND JOHN J. STUTZMAN, OF PULASKI, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,361, dated June 23, 1874; application tiled April 4,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID W. GEORGE and JOHN J. STUTZMAN, of Pulaski in the county of Davis and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a partof this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a churn, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of our churn.
The frame-work for supporting our churn is composed of two frames, A A, connected at their lower ends by means ofa bar, B, on each side, and the side bars on each side are connected at their upperendsbybolts or screws a. C represents the Olllllll-bOX,-llli1(l6 somewhat in the form of an ellipse with the upper portion cut off. At each end of the box U is hinged a lid, D, which inclines toward the center; and the middle portionof the churn, between the inner edges of the lids D D, is closed by a lid, D. The milk breaks against theinclined lids D D and falls back to the center, .and when said lids are opened it gives ample room for taking out the butter and airing the churn. E E are handles attached one to each end of the churn, by which the churn is operated. On the bottom of the churn-box U are attached wed geshaped ribs or ridges GG, which break the under current of the milk. The churn-box Ois suspended in the frame-work by means 'of hooks b, the lower ends of said hooks being pivoted to the sides of the box,and the hooks upon studs (1 d on the inner side of the framework.
By this means of hanging the churn a combined rotary and horizontal motion may be imparted to the churn, which is of great benefit in gathering the butter.
.Vhen the churn is not in use, the framework may be folded up by simply taking out I the screws a. v
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the frame-work A B, provided with the studs (1, the hooks b b pivoted to the sides of the churn-box O and connected around the studsd, so that the churn- 'itnesses:
