Description
W. D. SNELL. Ohurn-Dasher.
Patented Mar. 16, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WESLEY D. SNELL, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CHURN-DASHER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,655, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed January 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WEsLEY D. SNELL, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurn-Dashers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of reciprocating churn-dasl1ers which are composed of two parallel leaves or blades hinged upon a reciprocating bar or cross-head and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Ais the dasher-staff, which is hinged in a bifurcated head, B, at its lowerend. The head B is pivoted by a bolt, 12, which is screwed into its under side upon the middle of the cross-piece O, the bolt 1) passing vertically through said cross-piece, and having a cross-head or key, 0, at its lower end, upon the under side of cross-piece 0, against which it bears, said key being held in place by the nut d.
The cross piece G is made with a longitudinal rib or flange, e, on its under side, which is enlarged on the middle to conform to the shape of the central key, 0, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. In turning the hinged staff or handle A and its pivoted head B the key is turned with it.
D D are cross-heads, secured one at each end of the cross piece or bar 0, and provided with stops ff. E E arethe dasher wings or blades, which are hung by their pivots g g g g in the cross-heads D D, one on each side of bar (3, against the under side of which the innor sides of the wings E E impinge, separated from each other by the downward-projecting rib e. The middle part of the inner side of each of the wings is cut out to make room for the central enlargement, e, of said rib or flange, and by turning the key 0 across or crosswise upon said enlargement e, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the wings or blades E E will be locked in a horizontal position. By turning the key, by means of the staff A, in the opposite direction, as shown by dotted lines in said figure, the wings will be free to swing in a downward direction, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. When in this position the dashcr-wings will bear against the shoulder of cross-bar O and their outer stops, f f, on the downward stroke of the dasher, but will be released on the upward stroke, so as to cut the cream with ease; and when the butter has been made it is withdrawn from the churn by turning staff A (and with it the key 0) onefourth around, when the dasher is at the end of its downward stroke, which looks the blades E E in their horizontal rigid position, so that the butter may be lifted up upon them, the buttermilk draining oil through the perforations with which the blades are provided.
By hinging the staff A to its head B it may be held in a bent position while raising and carrying the dasher, thereby facilitating these operatlons.
I am aware that churn-dashers have been constructed before with pivoted dash-leaves adapted to be held in a horizontal position by a turn-button, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The herein-described churn-dasher, consisting of the hinged or jointed staff A, pivoted head B, provided with the bolt 12 and key 0, cross-bar G, cross-heads D D, having stops f f, and pivoted parallel blades E E, arranged on opposite sides of the cross-bar G, the whole constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' WESLEY D. SNELL.
