CHURN-DASHER.

:sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,882, dated December 8, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. HOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springdale, in the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurn-Dashers; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to churndasheraand has for its object to provide the same with one or more revoluble beaters.

The novelty consists in the details of construction, arrangement, and combinations of the several parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a dasher constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the revoluble heaters. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the beater-arm supportinghubs. Fig. at is a side elevation of a lower portion of a dasher-handle provided with a stem or shank on which the revoluble heaters are 0 journaled.

A dasher-handle, A, is provided at its lower end with a stem or shank, G, on which the revoluble heaters B B are journaled, thesanie being held in place on the shank by a nut, c, screwed onto the extreme end of said shank. The revoluble heaters are composed of a hub, 12, provided with radial arms e,integrally cast therewith, the latter extending preferably at right angles thereto and set obliquely to the bore of the hub, a shoulder, f, being formed at the junction of the arms with the hub. Blades D are secured to the arms a of the hub, their inner ends abutting against the shoulders f. Owing to the inclination of the arms to the bore of the hub, the blades D are made to assume a corresponding inclination. These heaters are made in pairs, the blades of the one being oppositely inclined to the blades of the other by reversely inclining the radial 5o arms of the hub. A pair of such heaters are Serial No. 169,107. (No model.)

mounted on the shank O of the handle, and secured thereon in any known manner, a hot, as a, being shown for the purpose.

From the foregoing the action of the dasher is obvious. As the same is reciprocated in the cream or other fluid the resistance to the inclined blades will cause the heaters to revolve, thus producing a combined reciprocating and rotary motion.

\Vhile the form shown is preferred, it is manifest that the dasher may be provided with one or more revoluble heaters.

I am aware that revoluble bea tcrs for churndashers have been made, the hub and blades being integrally cast, and do not claim such construction, as the boaters are necessarily heavy, whereas by my construction, the hub being cast separate from the blades,the latter may be of any suitable light materialsuch as sheet metal or wood-and rigidly attached to the hub. In case of accidental damage to any of the blades, my arrangement permits of the replacement, which would not be the case if the blade and hub were of one piece.

It will be noticed that thearlns radiating from the hub afford a means of attachment and give the proper inclination to the blades, which are secured thereto,preferably by a single rivet. Any tendency to lateral or vibratory movement of the blades is prevented by their inner ends abutting square against the shoulder formed near the junction of the arms with the hub.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

A revoluble beater consisting of a hub having radial arms integral] y cast therewith and set obliquely to the bore of the hub, each arm forming a square shoulder atit-s junction with the hub, in combination with blades secured to the inclined face of the arms, and having their inner ends batted against the shoulders, substantially as shown and described.
