GHURN DASHBB..
Patented Aug. 18,1885.
trally on the opposing faces of the dashers UNITED STATES THOMAS H. ABERCROMBIE, OF TUMBLING SHOALS, SOUTH CAROLINA.
CHURNWDASHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,511, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed May 14, 1885.
To @ZZ whom it may cocern:
Be it known that I, 'IHoMAs H. ABERCROM- BIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tumbling Shoals, in the county of Laurens and State of South Carolina, have invented a newand useful Improvement in ChurnDasl1- ers, of which the following is a specilication, reference beingliad to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to an improvement in churn-dashers; and it consistsin the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter7 and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a churn-dasher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional View.
A represents a dasherlrod, on the lower end of which is journaled a dasher, B. The daslier B has four radial blades, C, which are inclined at an angle of about forty-tive degrees. Through each of the blades C is cut an inclined slot, D, the angle of which corresponds with the angle of the blades, these slots serving to increase the bearing-surfaces of the blades, and also to permit the ready passage of the cream therethrough as the dasher is worked up and down in the churn, and to lighten the labor of operating the dasher. On the dashers-rod, a slight distance above the dasher B, is `journaled a similar dasher, E, having blades F, that are inclined in the direction opposite to that of the blades C, and slots G in the blades F, the angle of which corresponds to the inclination of said blades. The dashersB and E being loose on the dasherrod, and their blades being inclined in opposite directions, are caused to rotate in opposite directions when the dasheris operated. Cenare secured metallic plates H, through which the dasher-rod passes. A sleeve, I, is placed on the dasherrod between the dashers, and on the dashcr-rod are screwed nuts K, one of (No model.)
which bears against the under side of the lower dasher, and the other of which bears against the upper side of the upper dasher, and thus keep the dashers in place upon the dasher-rod.
A churn-dasher thus constructed is cheap 'and simple, is very durable, can be readily taken apart when necessary in order to clean it, and is thoroughly efficient, producing butter from cream in avery short time and without laborious exertion.
I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to construct churn-dashers with radial inclined blades provided with correspondingly-inclined open slots to divide the blades, and this I disclaim.
I am also aware that it has been heretofore proposed to journal two dashers to :a dasherrod, and to provide said dashers with radial blades inclined in opposie directions, to rotate the dashers in contrary directions, and this, also, I disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the threaded dasherrod, the dashers journaled thereon at a suitable distance apart, said dashers being made of Wood, and having radial inclined blades provided with correspondinglyinclined open slots dividingfthe blades, the blades and slots ol' one dasher being inclined in the opposite direction from the blades and slots of the other dasl1er,to cause the dashers to rotate in opposite directions, the metallic plates H, secured to the opposing faces ot' the dashers, the sleeve I, on the rod between the dashers, and the nuts K, for securing the dashers in place, subtantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. ABERCROMBIE.
