'IMPROVEMENT lN EGG-BEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,493, dated July 24, 1877; application led June 5, 1877.
Y Laporte City, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Beaters; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art -to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in egg-beaters and cream-whippers 5 and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, I will novi proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying "drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l'is a front View; Fig. 2, a sectional view; and Figs. 3 and 4, views of detached parts, hereinafter described.
A represents the handle, to which is arranged, on a suitable axle, a side and beveled gear-wheel, B, which engages at the bottoni with apinion, O,arranged on as'uitable bearing at the lower end ofthe handle A. The under side of the pinion O is provided with an elliptical groove or channel, D, having an inner flange, a, and an outer fiange, a. (Shown in Fig. 3.) E is an extension of the handle A, upon which the pinion O revolves. This extension, at a suitable distance from the pinion, is provided with a rectangular shoulder, b, to which are hinged four arms, F, having Shanks c' extending upward and into the elliptical groove D of the pinion G. The arms F are secured to their Shanks c by having their two sides turned over the two arms of the shank, as shown in Fig. 4, and are hinged to the shoulder b of the extension E by having the upper end d passed through and turned under suitable slots or eyes in the shoulder b.
The operation of my device is as follows: I
By turning the wheel B motion is given to the pinion O, which will cause a double reciprocating motion of the arms F, as will be readily understood by reason of the elliptical groove on the under side of the pinion C. When two opposite shanks are at their greatest distance apart in the groove the outer flange a of said groove will cause thevother two Shanks to be drawn together, and by causing the pinion to revolve one-half revolution the inner flange of the groove will throw said shanks out, and vice versa.
By this operation two opposite arms are thrown either in or out at the same time, thereby producing a double reciprocating motion, by which a quicker and a better result is accomplished than can be produced by the 01d style of beater now in use.,
My egg-beater may also be used as a creamwhipper by proceeding in the same manner as it' beating eggs.
Having `thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
1. An egg-beater or cream-whipped', the armsot which are hung substantially as described, and having imparted to them a reciprocating action in opposite directions, each set of two arms alternating with the other'set, as shown and described.
2. In an egg-beater or cream-whipper, the combination ot' the handle A, beveled gear B, pinion O, having the under side provided with an elliptical groove, as shown, handle-extension E, and four reciprocating arms, F, all combined and operating substantially as shown and described.
3. In an egg-beater or cream-whipper, an arm, F, having a double shank, c, att-ached thereto by having the sides turned over the two arms of the shank and hinged to the extension E of the handle by forming a loop, d, of the upper end, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LLOYD EBERHAR'I.
