These rivets 23 and 24 engage in spiral cam slots 25 and 26 respectively in the base or inner end 21 of a lever 28 which is pivotally mounted on the pin 22. The inclination or curvature of the slots 25 and 26 is such that when the lever 28 is in the dotted line position shown in Figure 1, the band is expanded so that the flange segments l2 can spring outwardly and thus permit the closure to be detached from the end of the barrel I0. When the lever 28 is swung downwardly to the full line position shown in Figure 1, the ends 20 and 2i of the band are drawn closer together so that the band l9 compresses the flange l2 into the undercut portion l8 of the rim 15 of the barrel and thereby locks the closure tightly to the end of the barrel H1.
The lever 28 is provided with a downwardly or laterally directed end portion 29 which is adapted to pass through a slot 30 in the beaded rim l3, as shown in Figure 1, to prevent the lever from being sprung outwardly away from the closure if it should catch on something as the barrel is being filled or otherwise handled. The lever can be locked so that the closure cannot be released inadvertently by providing a hole 3| in the end of the lever for receiving a twisted wire 32 or other locking member.
The band I9 is not readily released from the closure when it has been attached thereto, for it cannot drop downwardly due to the presence of the beaded lower edge of the flange. Upward movement of the band [9 can also be prevented by means of suitable protuberances 33 disposed around the circumference of the flange. One protuberance 33, near the end 20 of the band [9, also prevents the end 20 of the band from being moved upwardly as the lever 28 is moved in a clockwise direction into its clamping position.
From the preceding description of a typical form of closure member embodying the present invention, it will be understood that I have provided means for securely attaching a closure member to a container, and one in which the parts lie substantially flush with and within the perimeter or circumference of the closure member so that it will not be damaged or sprung by contact with other adjacent articles. Moreover, I have provided a very simple means for retaining the closure member in locked or clamped position so that it cannot be released inadvertently. Moreover, by the use of flxed pivot for the lever and a band which has both ends movable relatively to the pivot, a more uniform clamping pressure can be obtained around the circumference of the closure member than with the devices of the type produced heretofore.
It will be understood further that closures of the type described above can be made in many difierent sizes and designs and may be used with small or large receptacles as the purpose demands. Therefore, it will be understood that the form of the invention described above is illustrative and not to be considered as limiting the scope of the following claims.
