Be it known that I, GEORGE H. OHATILLON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scale-Pans, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to an improvement on that class of scale-pans which are provided with a downwardly-projecting flange and protected on their surfaces with a coat of enamel, as described in Letters Patent granted to my brother and business partner, John P. Chatillon, July 31, 1873, and numbered 143,499. During the eleven years last past we have manufactured and sold a very large number of scales containing scale-pans of the class above described; but in many cases we have found that the enamel 011 the outer surface of the downwardly-projecting flange, and particularly on the edge of the scale-pan, is liable to become broken and worn.
The object of my present invention is to avoid this disadvantage by applying to the downwardly-projecting flange of the scale-pan a protecting-ring which overlaps the edge of the scale-pan and also the bottom edge of the flange. This protecting-ring also affords additional strength to the connections between the suspension-hoop and the scale-pan.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section. Fig. 2 is an illverted plan, partly in section.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the scalepan, which is provided with a downwardly-projecting flange, a, and protected on its surface with a coat of enamel. With the flange a is combined aprotecting-ring, b,which overlaps the edge 0 of the scale-pan, and also the bottom edge of the flange a, as shown in Fig. 1. This ring is by preference made of sheet metal, and it is nickel-plated, so that it imparts to the scale-pan an ornamental appearance, while it serves particularly to pro- (No model.)

The suspension-hoop B is provided with two branches, (1 d, at each end, and the ends of these branches are provided with lips e,.which catch beneath the bottom edge of the ring b. They are fastened to the scalepan by means of screws f,which pass through the ends of the branches cl (1, and through straps g, which are placed against the inner surface of the downwardly-projecting flange a. The ends of the straps form nuts, into which the screws fit, and, if desired, these nuts can be made dotached one from the other; but Iprefer to use the connected nuts, as shown. It will be readily understood from this description that by means of the protecting-ring b the connection between the suspension-hoop and the scale-pan is materially strengthened, since the hoop is supported by the ring as well as by the flange.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, substantially as hereinbeforc described, with a scale-pan having a downwardly projecting flange, a, and protected on its surface with a coat of enamel, of a protecting-ring, b, which overlaps the edge 0 of the scale-pan and the bottom edge of the flange a.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, with the scale-pan A, its downwardly-projecting flange a, and its suspension-hoop B, of the ring b, which overlaps the edge of the scale-pan and the bottom edge of the flange a, the nuts 9, placed against the inner surface of the flange a, the lips 6, formed at the ends of the branches d d of the suspension-hoop, and the screws f.
