DESIGN FOR ORNAMENTING PLATES AND DISHES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 11,697, dated March 23, 1880.

Application tiled October 14, 1879. Term of patent 14 years.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCESCO A. MARRA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Pattern for Ornamenting Plates and Dishes, of which the following is a specification.

' The new pattern or design consists, essentially, of a plate having an annular ornamentation or border and a central ligure, picture or design, the whole having the appearance of an annular concave ornamented frame and inclosed picture.

The plate or disk is provided with an opening in its bottom, which opening may be of any suitable size to contain and properly exhibit the picture, and it is vornamented about the opening, so as to constitute a fra-Ine or background for the picture. A picture or photograph suitable for ornamentation is secured in the center of said plate, so as to be protected, while at the same time itis exposed to View.

My new design is plainly shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure l is a front view of the plate, and Fig. 2 a section through the same.

The plate is provided with an opening of suitable configuration, such as shown, and the surface of the dish or plate about the opening is ornamented in any ordinary or suitable way-such, for example, as shown-so as to form a border, frame, or background to the picture exposed through the bottom of the plate.

In order that those skilled in the art may understand how to apply my design, I would say that a plate of glass is set into the bottom of the plate to be ornamented, back of which glass the picture is arranged, and that the whole is secured together in any suitable Way.

I do not,however, claim herein such mechanical construction or manipulation, as these are embraced in and constitute subject-matters of a patent for an invention granted to me December 16, 1879, and numbered 222,594.

I do not limit myself to the particular ornamentation shown of the border or of the inclosed picture or photograph.

I expressly disclaim, however, the painting of the picture in contradistinction to the border or frame upon an ordinary dish or plate, as this will not produce the special effects of my design.

What I claim is- The within-described design, which consists, essentially, of a plate or dish having an annular ornamentation or border and a central tigure, picture, or design, the whole having the appearance of an annular concave or ornamented frame and inclosed picture.
