PAPER-BAG HOLDER.
GPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,561, dated August 12, 1884.
' Application filedMayl, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FIELDON B. CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United St-ates, residing at Burlington, in the county of Coffey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Bag Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of the bag-holder. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front View of the. same, showing bags held thereby, and illustrating the mode of detaching a bag therefrom.
Like letters designate corresponding parts inall of the figures.
My invention is especially designed for holding paper bags for use in grocery and other stores, but may be used for holding papers and other thin articles in quantity.
The invention consists in combining with a holder having a spring-holding clip or springclasp at one end, another clip or spring-finger at one corner, or at the side near the other end of the body of the holder, and operating in a direction substantially at right angles to the other clip; also, in combining with the clip, or with each clip, a toothed retainer, to hold upon the under or back side of the package or bunch of bags or papers, to assist in holding the same in proper position.
I11 the drawings, A represents the body of the holder, and may be made of a thin piece of wood of suitable size and shape, and be provided with one or two holes, a a, by which to suspend it on or attach to the wall of a room, or to screw itto the counter of a store by one or more screws. Near the upper end of the body is secured the principal clip or spring-clasp B, for holding a bunch or package of bags formed in the manner shown, or in any other suitable way. It projects downward over the board or body A, or from the end where it is attached toward the middle of the body, and springs toward the body to retain the paper bags between it and the said body. It has or may have a loop, I), for lifting ordrawing it away from the body for convenience in inserting the bags. At one side of the body A, near the end opposite to the clip B, is secured another clip or spring-finger,G, projecting substantially at right angles to the projection of the clip B, or laterally over the body toward the middle of the same, and also spring toward the body to hold one corner of each bag between it and the said body. This clip also is made in any convenient or suitable way. Both the clips may be made of a single piece of wire, as shown, and I prefer this construction and claim it as an advantage 0 or other constructions in simplicity and chcapness. To give breadth to and steadiness to the action of the main clip, the wire is or may be coiled around rollers or pins D D, as shown. Attached to the body A beneath orback of the two clips are toothed i, retainers E E, as shown, to held against the back or bottom of the package of bags and assist in retaining them in proper position.
In using this holder the bags G-say from twenty-five to fifty in numberare placed under both clips, as shown in Fig. 3, the main clip B principally holding the bags near the upper ends thereof, and the clip 0 pressing upon the other ends of the bags near one cor ner, thereby serving to keep all the bags evenly in position and prevent any of the remaining bags from being displaced by detaching'the top bag. \Vhen a bag is to. be detached from the holder, it is seized at the corner a: and
drawn sidewise till it is detached from the side clip, C. as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. It is then withdrawn from the upper clip, B, in the usual manner, the two clips holding all the remaining bags in position.
It is the employment of two clips for holding the package of bags and the detachment of single bags first from one clip and then fromthe other that constitutes the main principle of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the body A, main clip B, projecting from one end toward the middle of the body and pressing toward the same, and the clip G,projecting laterally over the body near the other end thereof and pressing toward the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The toothed retainers E, in combination with the clips B C, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The two clips B 0, formed of a single 5 piece of wire, in combination with the body A, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FIELDON B. CUNNINGHAM.
