"DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,169, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed March 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Orrs P. VANDEBURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to door-checks; and it has for its object to provide a'device of this character which shall be extremely simple in its construction, and yet thoroughly effective and positive in its operation, and, further, to provide a device of this character which may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and one that may be readily applied.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1' is an elevation showing the parts in position to retain the door open, the portion secured to the door being in section; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the socket which receives ball-head of the stem, arranged upon the base-board.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, A represents a door, near the bottom and front edge of which is secured a casting, B, which forms the bearing for the check. This casting B consists of the flanges a, provided with suitable perforations or openings for the passage of screws for its attach- Inent. From the upper edges of these flanges projects a tubular portion, 0, which is provided at its upper end with an inwardly-extending annular flange, G. tubular portion upon the upper edges of the flanges a, the edges of said tubular portion project beyond the inner edges of the flanges a, thus forming a seat, a, between which and the door is interposed a strip or piece of rubber, b, which is securely clamped by means of;
the lower edges of the tubular portion, which, as before stated, project beyond the flanges a. D represents a plate securedto the baseboardby means of screws or equivalent fast-= ening, which also secure an interposed piece of rubber, c, the purpose of which will be here- By locating the inafter more fully described. From the plate D projects a stem, E, which is formed at its upper end with a ball-head, as shown, which is adapted to enter the tubular portion 0 and bear against the edges of the flange C, and thus securely retain the door in an open position against any drafts or currents of air which may be circulating through a building. The stem E, when in its normal position, is situated on a plane a slight distance above the edge of the flange O;-but when it strikes said flange the rubber cushion interposed between its base and the'base-board yields and allows it to enter, where it is held by the expansion of said rubber cushion.
It will be seen from the above description that my device is simple, is readily applied,
is thoroughly effective, and certain in. its operation, and that it may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost.
, Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-v ters Patent, is-
1. A door-check consisting of a tubular portion having at its lower end an outwardly-projecting flange for its attachment, and. at its upper end an inwardly-projecting flange, and a plate provided with a stem or post having a headed portion, and an elastic cushion located between said plate and the base-board, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a door-check, a stem or post having a headed portion and a plate for its attachment, an elastic cushion interposed between said plate and the base-board, and means carried by the door for receiving said headed portion of the stem, substantially as set forth.
3. Ina door-check, a tubular portion provided with a flangefor its attachment, an elastic cushion secured to thedoorwithin said tubular portion, an inwardly-projecting annular flange at the upper edge of said tubular portion, a stem adapted to be secured to the base-board and provided with a headed end, and an elastic cushion interposed between said stem and the baseboard, substantially as set forth.
4. A door-check comprising a tubularportion having atits lower end a flange with means for its attachment, an elastic cushion In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 10 clamped to the door by thelower edges of said my own I have hereto affixed my signature in tubular portion, which is also provided at its presence of two witnesses.
