Description

R. HOLCROFT. SASH-HOLDER.
Patented May 9,1876.
Unrrnp STATES PATENT Orrxon.
RICHARD HOLOROFT, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,247, dated May 9, 1876; application filed March 16, 1876. w
radius will be between the sleeve B and the frame F, thus permitting the sash to be raised without opposition or binding on the part of said cam. The downward movement of the sash, however, will cause said cam to roll, its periphery impinging against the frame F, so that its longer radius or enlarged part a will become wedged between the sleeve B and the said frame, thus arresting said downward movement, and holding the sash fixedly in position. a shows a shoulder on the periphery of the cam, adjacent to the handle E. The object ofthis shoulder is toprevent the cam from rolling in such manner as to cause it to wedge, in the manner described, on the upward motion of the sash D. G shows an elastic strip, of sheet-rubber or equivalent material, let into or affixed to the frame F. .The effect of this will be to permit the cam to bind more firmly, and to prevent the acci dental disengagement of the latter by the jolting of the car.
The operation is briefly as follows: The sash is raised by taking hold of it in the usual manner. On letting go of it'the downward tion of a sash looking or supporting cam, motion causes the cam to roll and bind, as'alwhich has a gravity-handle to control it aureadystated. To lower the sash the handle tomatically, and upon its edge or periphery E is turned to assume a vertical position, and a shoulder-stop,to prevent the cam from wedgheld thus until the desired descent has been ing when the sash is raised. accomplished.
My invention furthermore consists in the I do not claim, broadly, as my invention the combination, with a cam of the peculiar conflanged sleeve which supports the cam, but, struction referred to, of aflanged sleeve, upon conceding its previous use in other connecwhich said cam works, a screw securing said tions, merely claim it as an element of a legitisleeve and cam to the sash, with or without mate combination.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD HOLGROFT, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Sash-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the cam and vertical transverse section of the sleeve and screw. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cam. Fig. 4 isa vertical transverse section of my invention.
The object of my inventionis to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device for holding up window-sashes atany altitude, said device being self-acting, and being designed particularly for car-windows, wherea tendency to drop, occasioned by the jolting of the car, has to be met and resisted.
My invention consists in the novel construcan elastic strip for the cam to impinge upon, What I claim as my invention isall as hereinafter more fully described and 1. The cam A, provided with a gravity-handefinitely claimed. dle, E, and shoulder-stop a, substantially as Referring to the accompanying drawing, A shown and described.
