PATBNTED JUNE 30, 1908.

J. PISHEK.

TRAP DOOR ATTACHMENT.

AHLIOATION FILED JULY 16, 1907. l

liHIIIlIII wir eases UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

JOSEPH PISHEK, OF NEAR VAN METRE, SOUTH DAKOTA.

TRAr-Doon ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH PIsHEK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing near Van Metre, in the county of Stanley and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trap-Door Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved lifter for ltrap doors, cellar doors and other like doors,

and consists in the construction, combination andl arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved lifter which is adapted to be mortised in the upper side of the trap door, cellar door or the like to lie with its upper surface flush with the surface of such door so that there will be no obstructions on the surface of the door to collect dirt, and in which the ring or handle is pivotally mounted and is disposed entirely out of the way when not in use.

In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a door lifter embodying my invention, showing the same mortised in the upper surface of a door, a portion of which is also shown. Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the same showing the underside of the lifter. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the handle or ring of the lifter being shown in its normally horizontal position in full lines and in its upturned position for use in dotted lines.

In accordance with my invention I provide a plate 1 which may be of any suitable size and shape and is here shown as of oblong rectangular form. The said plate is adapted to be mortised or recessed in the upper surfaces of a door a, such as a trap door, cellar door, or the like, so that the upper surface of the said plate will be flush with that of the door. Said plate is provided with openings for the reception of screws 2 which secure thesame to the door. In the center of the plate is an opening 3 which is preferably of oblong rectangular form, as here shown. On the underside at opposite sides ofthe said opening and at a suitable distance from one end of the same area pair of lugs 4, which are here shown as formed separately therefrom and as secured thereto by means of rivets 5. Near the opposite end of the said opening on opposite sides thereof and on the underside of the said plate are a pair of de- Specification of Letters Patent.

pending lugs 6 on the underside of which is a connecting bridge 7, said bridge being here shown as secured to said lugs, and the latter being shown as secured to the plate by means of rivets 8.

An arm 9, which corresponds in size and shape with the opening 3, is placed in the the said opening and is provided on its underside with a lug 10 which lies between the lugs 4 and is connected thereto by a pivot 11 so that the said arm may be turned to lie in a common plane with the plate 1, as indicated in full lines in the various figures of the drawing, or may be turned at an angle with reference to the said plate, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 3. On theunderside of the said arm at a suitable distance from the outer end thereof is secured a handle or ring 12, which, when the said arm has been upturned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, serves as a hand hold to enable the door to be opened or closed. On the outer side of the arm 9 at a point near the inner end thereof is a recess 13 in which the person desiring to open the door places his `linger and applies pressure to the inner end of the said arm, so as to cause the latter to move to the position indicated in dotted lines and thereby raise the handle or ring above the surface of the door. The said handle or ring may be formed integrally with the arm or separately therefrom, as may be preferred or found most economical.` When the said arm 9 is in its lowered position and in the plane of the plate 1 the same rests on and is supported in such position by the bridge 7.

It will be understood from reference to the drawings that when the door is closed and the arm 9 downturned, my improved lifter is flush with the upper surface of the door and presents no obstruction whatever thereon to accumulate dirt.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A lifter for trap doors and the like comprising a plate for application to the outer surface of the door said plate having an opening and a stop device under such opening, in combination with an arm pivotally connected with such plate, operating in such opening engaged by such stop when in downturned position and thereby held with its outer face flush with that of the plate, said arm being provided on its underside with a handle or the like device, for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein described lifter for trap closed position and held by such sto with doors, cellar doors, and other like doors comits outer face Hush with that ofthe sai plate,

prising a plate adapted to be mortised in the and a handle or the like device attached to upper side of a door said plate provided with I and extending from the underside of said arm,

a longitudinal opening, lugs on the underside I for the purpose set forth.
