VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,784, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed October 22, 1892. Serial No, 449,569. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. HYznR,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved ventilator adapted to be used with dwelling houses, sleeping rooms, public halls, railroad cars and other places where it is desired to have the same perfectly and thoroughly ventilated.
The object of theinveution is to provide an improved device of the above description which can be readily secured to the wall of a building whereby the foul and vitiated air in an apartment is allowed to escape and pure, Wholesome air to take its place.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a ventilator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upright or lug detached.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates' a metallic box, adapted to be passed through an opening in the wall of a house, car or other structure. lVhen used in a dwelling house it is preferably located underneath or above the window of the room which it is to be used in connection with. The outer end of this box is curved or rounded and is provided with an opening V2, leading to the atmosphere. Pivoted in this box intermediate of the ends thereof is a valve 4, consisting of a rectangular plate, the pivot pin 6 thereof passing through lugs thereon, near the outer end thereof. This valve is adapted to the edges of the side walls of the box. This valve is provided with an inwardly extending rod 8, passing through a lug 13, secured to one of the walls of the box and is adapted to strike and open valve 4, when it is actuated. The journal or pivot pin 9, of valve 7, is provided with a double crank 10, one end of which is adapted to be grasped by the fingers to operate the same and the other end is adapted to engage with anotched segment 12, secured to the box, soas to hold the valve in any position to which it may be adjusted.
The operation will be readily understood. An opening is made in the building through which the ventilator is passed and secured in any convenient manner so that the opening in the outer end thereof will communicate with the atmosphere. When it is desired to open the ventilator to allow the foul and vitiated air to escape, the valve 7, is turned so as to open the same, when the rod 8 will strike the valve 4, opening the same and thus affording an egress for said air. The throw of these valves can be regulated by adjusting the inner valve and it may be retained in its adjusted position by means of the crank and notched segment.
From the above it will be seen that I provide a very efficient device for the purpose intended, which is burglar-proof and also proof against unauthorized tampering with.
The outer end of the box may be provided with a wire gauze covering or screen to prevent access of insects and dust or dirt.
