L. S. WIEMANN.
VBNTILATOR. APPLIoATIoN FILED 00T. 2s, 1907.
PATBN'IED JUNE 30, 1908.
LOUIS S. WIEMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 30, 1908.
Application filed October 28, 1907. Serial No. 399,449.
l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis S. WIEMANN, citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinels, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to house ventilators, and particularly to that class thereof psed in connection with a smoke flue or the ike.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device which will allow the foul air to be exhausted, and which will prevent any back flow of soot or dirt through the ventilator,
The ventilator is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a face view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a short tube or pipe which is made of proper shape and size to `fit in a stovepipe-hole or other opening in the wall adj acent to the smoke flue. This tube is provided on the outside with a collar 7 which is adapted to fit around the edge of the opening. The tube 6 is halved at its inner end, as indicated at 16, the upper half being removed and the lower half remaining, and said projecting portion is provided with a hole 17 and it is intended that th`e reduced portion 16 will project through the wall into the flue, and that the current of air or smoke rising in the ilue will pass through the hole 17, and thus produce a draft directly across the end of the pipe 6 which will induce a flow of air through said pipe.
On the front of the ring plate 7 a casing or receptacle S is formed or secured, consisting preferably of an inclined front plate supported by triangular end plates, and provided with a lid 15 at the top, which is hinged at 25 and is arranged to swing open or closed, being operated by means of a lever 12 located within the casing and pivoted at 14 and bearing at one end against the under side of the lid and having at the other end a pin 13, which extends through a slot 11 in the end of the casing. A cord 26 is connected to the pin and when the same is pulled down the cover 15 is lifted to open the ventilator.
At its outer end the tube 6 has a screen 9, conveniently formed of woven wire fabric, and within this is a flap 10 of thin porous cloth which is fastened at the top only and which will blow open or closed according to the direction of the draft through the venti later. IVhen the draft is from the room toward the flue the cloth 10 blows away from the screen 9 and so docs not obstruct a flow of air, but in case of any back pressure or flow from the flue, the cloth will ily against the screen 9 and close the same, or at least prevent the passage of smoke and dirt. Any dust or fine stul'l which may blow in will ordinarily settle in the compartment 8.
The device may be conveniently located in rooms near the ceiling, and arranged to open into any adjacent smoke flue or Ventilating flue, and will serve to draw ofl the foul heated air from the rooms, and the extent of the ventilation may be controlled by the lid 15.
I claim:
1. A ventilator comprising a tube adapted to extend horizontally through a wall to a flue, and a casing on the outer end of the tube, having a door in the top thereof.
2. A ventilator comprising a tube adapted to extend horizontally through a wall and to a ilue and having a lower extension on its inner end, to extend into the llue, and provided with an opening for the passage of the flue contents, and a casing on the outer end of the tube, having a door.
3. A ventilator comprising a tube adapted to extend through a wall and to a flue or the like, a screen across the outer end of the tube, a flap valve within the tube, connected at the top and arranged to swing to and from the screen, and a casing around the outer end of the tube, provided with a door in the top.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS S. VIEMANN.
Witnesses:
