1 Claim. (Cl. 24-73) This invention appertains to means for supporting garments and for preventing outer shirts from rising upward therefrom. The present invention constitutes an improvement over that disclosed and claimed in my previous United States Patent Number 2,463,079, granted March 1, 1949.
For reasons of comfort and because they help secure outer dress shirts in place, many persons prefer to support their trousers or slacks by means of suspenders rather than by means of a belt. Despite great improvement in the appearance of suspenders, they are still thought unattractive. On account of this sentiment, many persons shun their use, particularly during warm weather when it is necessary to dispense with the wearing of vests or even coats which normally conceal them.
The main object of my invention is to provide improved brace and garment connector means which will readily permit the use of conventional suspenders under a dress shirt while at the same time preventing the same from rising on the body of the wearer.
Many other and further objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification when considered in the light of the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front view of the device of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the device of Figure 1, taken along line 22 thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the device showing how suspenders may be attached thereto;
Figure 4 is a detail vertical sectional view through a garment showing how the device is disposed therein.
Figure 5 is a view showing a wearer fitted with concealed suspenders and with the device of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing wherein the same reference characters identify the same or like parts, the device of the invention comprises a substantially T-shaped member consisting of a thin sheet of metal or plastic. As indicated, the middle of the upper part of member 10 opens wide enough at 12 to receive the buttons usually carried by the waist band of trousers and slacks. Opening 12 communicates with a longitudinal slit 14, each end of which will receive one of the waist buttons.
Opening 12 and slit 14 preferably are lined with means 16 for preventing cutting-of the threads securing the buttons to the trousers. Such means include rubber, cotton, or plastic tape and are shown in Figures 2 and 4.
Patented Jan. 3, 1961 Integral with member 10 and preferably formed from the same piece of material by bending the same so as to form a partially resilient paper clip-shaped curve between them, is suspender connector member 18, to the upper end of which is secured a button or rivet 20. This last part is adapted to be connected to suspender thongs as shown in Figure 3.
The manner of using the present device will be obvious from the following in view of Figures 3, 4 and 5. The multiple or single suspender thongs 22, 24, are secured to button 20. Next the outer dress shirt 23 is put on by the wearer, and the end of it is slipped into the space intermediate members 10 and 18. As shown this space is substantially U-shaped.
Next, the T-shaped part of the device is secured to the buttons 21 on the waist band by passing each in turn through opening 12 and into slit 14. As shown on Figure 4, the terminal line of member 10 after this securing operation lies below the top of waist band 26.
The partially resistant nature of the device forces the pants button to press hard on the end of the outer shirt thereby firmly securing the same and preventing it from rising on the wearer.
The present device is a great improvement over that disclosed and claimed in my previous patent in that it can be cast, cut or molded very easily from inexpensive material and simply bent over as described to form the finished article.
The device of the invention obviously is suitable for use with womens and childrens garments as well as mens.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the drawing and described above, many changes, alterations and modifications may be made falling within the generic spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claim.
I claim:
An attachable brace and garment connector comprising a substantially T-shaped member consisting of a thin sheet of relatively rigid material having an opening atone end and having a transverse slit along said end connecting with said opening, said slit being adapted to receive buttons of an outer garment therein, said connector being bent over to form a connector member of greater length than said T-shaped member and being in laterally spaced relation therefrom, said members forming a partially resilient substantially U-shaped curve at their juncture defining a space for receiving the extremity of an outer shirt and single button means on the upper end of said connector member for attaching suspender thongs.
