Be it known that I, ELIZABETH F. MCCABT- NEY, of Omaha, Douglas county, in the State of 'Nebraska have invented certain new and Auseful Improvements in SewingThimbles, of 'which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to more effect ually relieve the root of the finger-nail from pressure, and to support the thimble in position by a sufficient bearing above and below, and also to ventilate the space thus provided, while thoroughly protecting it.
The invention avoids the irritation due to pressure on the finger at and immediately adjacent to the base or root'of the nail, and by sufficiently Ventilating that portion of the thiinble, avoids the tenderness and brittleness of the nail, which is sometimes experienced with long use of the ordinary unventilated thimbles.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, and represent what I consider the' best means of carrying out the'invention.

A is thetop orapex of the thimble; A, the portion of the side adjacent to the top; and A2,' theband or base-the portion of the thimble farthest from the top. A3 is an intermediate portion. This part A is -of greater diameter than the adjacent portions on each side. It may, and preferably does, partake of the general conical form of the thimble. It
may be made in one with the parts A A2, the metal of this part being simply forced out be- .yond the adjacent parts. It may, if preferred in any case, be made in'a separate piece, and
attached to the adjacent parts by brazing or otherwise.
This part A3 is ventilated by holes These are profusely distributed over the entire area of the part A3, except the upper edge,.and ai'ord adequate ventilation. They are small and inclined, as shown. The needle will not, under any ordinary or extraordinary conditions, enter these perforations. In what I esteem the best form of the invention, this portion A, of larger ldiameter than the ladjacent parts, is extended uniformly quite around the thimble. This allows thethirnble to be applied in any position, and is certain to properly relieve the root of the nail from pressure.
A good portion ofthe advantages of the invention can, however, be secured by letting the raised portion A3 extend only half-way around, or even less? This latter construction is shown in Fig. 4.
