@MTED STATEg PATENT QEFEQEO GLAND BOLEY, OF SOMERSET, MICHIGAN.
CLOSURE FOR MILK-CANS.
Application filed July 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAND BOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Milk- Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in closures for milk cans, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be applied to or removed from operative position with convenience and facility and which permits a thorough ventilation and which also serves to prevent the ingress within the can of insects or other foreign matter.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved closure for milk cans whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View in elevation illustrating a cover constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through my improved closure, with the coacting can shown in section.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a milk can or the like of conventional construction and with which my improved closure, as herein embodied, is adapted to coact. As herein set forth, my improved closure comprises the body portion 1 substantially in the form of a truncated cone having its marginal portion 2 reinforced in any desired manner and having its upper flat portion 3 perforated. The perforations may be afiorded by having the flat portion 3 either foraminous or reticulated.
Depending from the body 1 at a predetermined point inwardly of its margin is the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1915.
Serial No. 40,734.
foraminous rim 4: adapted to overlie and telescopically engage the neck N of the can or container (3, and it is to be particularly noted that said rim 4 gradually increases in diameter from its top so that the same may be effectively wedged upon the neck N so as to maintain the closure against accidental displacement.
Disposed above the fiat portion 3 of the member 1 is the hood 5 substantially coneshape and having its lower portion of a diameter in excess of the diameter of the portion 3 of the body 1, and said hood 5 is maintained in predetermined spaced relation relative to the member 1 through the medium of the equi-distantly spaced stays 6, preferably three in number.
l/Vith my improved closure in applied po sition, it will be perceived that a circulation of air will be permitted therethrough, the air entering through the foraminous rim 4L and out through the perforate portion 3 whereby a sufiicient draft is created to draw out the warm air within the can or container C and thus facilitate its ventilation. It will also be perceived that rain, insects or other foreign matter is prevented from entering within the can or container G.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a closure for milk cans constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason 1 do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A closure member of the class set forth comprising a body substantially in the form of a truncated cone, the flat portion whereof being perforate, a hood supported by the body above the perforated portion thereof and in spaced relation thereto, said hood having its major diameter materially greater than the diameter of the flat portion of the body, stays interposed between the body and the hood for maintaining the hood in applied position, and a perforate rim depend Intestimony whereof I hereuntoaflix my ing from the body inwardly of its margins signature in the presence of two Witnesses. and having the inner edge of the rim secured OLAND BOLEY. directly to the body, said rim gradually in- Witnesses:
5 creasing in diameter from its inner end, said HAROLD L. HARD,
hood being cone-shape. LEOLA BOLEY.
