Description

PATENTED NOV. 20, I906.
E. L. BAUER.
VBNTILATED LID AND COVER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY '12. 1906.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VENTILATED LID AND COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed May 12, 1906. Serial No. 316,532.
To all whom, it natty concern.-
Be it known that I, ERVAN L. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of I/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilated Lids and Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ventilating lids or covers for culinary articles, dinner-pails, dairy vessels, &c., and particularly to improvements on the lid or cover shown in Patent No. 737,694, granted to myself on September 1, 1903.
In manufacturing the lid or cover secured by my patent I have found that in upsetting the central portion to form the ventilatingdome many of the blanks crack radially and become useless. I have therefore invented the cover that is the subject of this application to overcome the objectionable features of the other cover, the invention consisting in forming the dome of a separate piece from the cover and securing the dome in a hole in the cover by means of a lap-seam of novel construction.
The details of my invention will be fully described hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved lid or cover Fig. 2, a sectional view thereof; Fig. 3, a view showing a modification, and Fig. 4 a view showing my improvedlid or cover applied to a fruit-jar.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
My improved lid or cover A is provided with one or more circular openings (1, in each of which is secured a dome B, having an opening I) in its top, over which is secured a piece of gauze fabric C, as shown in Fig. 2, or the top may be made with perforations c, as shown in Fig. 3, if preferred, instead of having the gauze fabric C, as shown in Fig. 2.
In securing the dome B in place the metal of the vertical side of the dome B is bent or swaged to form an outwardlyprojecting fold D. The dome is then inserted in the o ening a, so that the fold D rests on the top of lid or cover A. The edge of dome B is then bent as shown at E, so as to clamp the lid or cover A at the edge of opening a between it and fold D and securely hold the dome in position.
F represents'a removable cap that fits over dome B and provided with holes f in its side.
It will be understood that my improved lid is adapted to rest on any vessel and may be used either with or without cap F. Generally if the contents of the vessel are hot the top E is not used until after they have cooled, after which the cap F may be placed in position and sufiicient ventilation will be Secured through perforations f, while the cap will more effectually exclude dust and dirt.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, instead of the dome being secured by means of a lap-seam the lower part of the vertical wall is threaded, as shown at G, to fit a threaded neck H on the cover A or on the top of a jar I.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A ventilating lid or cover comprising a lid proper having a circular opening therein, a dome secured in said opening, the top of said dome having ventilating-openings, and a cap having openings therein removably secured to said dome, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ventilated lid or cover comprising a lid proper having a circular opening therein, a dome secured in said opening having a hole in its top, a piece of gauze fabric secured over said hole, and a cap having openings therein removably secured to said dome, substantially as shown and described.
3. A ventilated lid or cover comprising a lid proper having a circular opening therein and a dome made of sheet metal secured in said circular opening having a fold around its vertical side to seat on top of the cover around the edge of said opening and its lower edge bent under the edge of the cover, substantially as shown and described.
4. A ventilated lid or cover comprising a lid proper having a circular opening therein, a dome made of sheet metal secured in said opening having a fold around its vertical side to seat on top of the cover around the edge of said opening and its lower edge bent under the edge of the cover, and a perforated cap removably secured to said dome, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto afIiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ERVAN L. BAUER.
