Be it known that I, EDWIN E. ARMSTRONG, of Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State oi' Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harnesses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction ot' back-pads i'or harnesses, by means oi' which greater facilities are had for changing the style of the trimmings.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction ot' the parts, their combination and operation, as more fully hereinafter described.

Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the saddle and pad. Fig. 2 is-an enlarged view, partially in section, ofthe pad detached. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through one halt' ofthe pad, the other halt' being a duplicate of it.

ln the accompanying drawings, which form a part oi' this speciication, A represents a harness-saddle having attached thereto the usual belly bands or straps. At the proper places this saddle is perforated to receive the shanks of the terrets B, which are threaded and adapted to engage with a suitable nut. C represents the pad,`the upper face, a, of which is preferably, although not necessarily, made of patent-leather.

b is the lining ot' the pad, covering the lling c, and d is a metallic plate interposed between t-he solter part of the pad and its'upper face, and secured thereto by rivets e, or in any other suitable manner. Around hole,

f, is cut through the upper face and through the metallic plate, so arranged that when the pad is in its relative position with the saddle the perforations in the latter will be coinci-V dent with the holes in the former. Extend ing in opposite directions from the holes f are the slots y, cut through the face of the pad and coincidently therewith through the nietallic plate.

D is a nut adapted to engage with the .threaded shank ot one of the terrets, and having extending on two opposite sides the iianges h, which must not be longer rthan the slots g. This nut is inserted edgewise in the hole and slots, and forced downward until it can be sei-ted through the holes in the saddle and engaged by means of the thread on its shank, with the nut concealed in the pad.

An awl or other like implement may be employed when it is desired to remove this nut to turn it up edgewise, when it may easily be taken out and replaced by another, if it is desired to change the style of the trimmings.

It will readily be seen that by this construction of the pad the retail manufacturer can apply any kind of trimmings which the purchaser may select, or change them, at pleasure.

To prevent the iilling of the pad from being displaced at the point of entrance for the shank ot' the terret, a cover to the lling is' stitched in, as shown at t'. y I am aware of the Patents Nos. 193,749 and 274,260, and make no claim to anything shown therein as forming partof my invention.

What I claim as my invention isl. The combination, with the pad G,'hav ing hole f, with slots f/ extending in opposite directions from said hole, oi the metallic plate stiffener d, having slotted hole corresponding and coincident with the hole in the pad, and

the nut D, having iianges h, o f less length and thickness than said slots, but of greater width,

whereby said nut can be inserted edgewise through said slots, but is prevented from being withdrawn when turned atwise, substantially as described.
