ATTORNEYS.
a: I l n l I l l l I l l l l I l l l u l n n UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM S. YOUNG, OF ST. JOHN, MISSOURI.
j TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,474, dated June 12, 1883.
Application filed May 29, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. S. YOUNG, of St.` John, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Trace-Carriers for Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enableV others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the lower part of the pad-skirtof a harness which is provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable loop or carrier detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate correl spending parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to trace supports or carriers of harness; and it consists in the detailed construction of a metallic loop or trace supporter, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the lower part of the skirt of a harnesspad or coach-pad, upon which is stitched a leather strap or layer, B.
C is a loop, made of iron, brass, or other suitable metal, and having a leather lining, c, riveted to the inside to prevent undue wear and chafmg of the trace which is inserted through it. This loop C is east with two smaller loops, D D, arranged transversely of its base-plate O-one at each end-for the in- 'sertion of the strap B.
Upon the base-plate C is a tongue, a, made with a bulge toward its point, which may be inserted through any one of a series of eyelet holes or perforations, b b, in the strap orhous* ing B. The base-plate is out away or recessed on each side of the tongue a, as shown at d, to afford room for the iingers to press against the edges of strap B when it is desired to release the strap for the purpose of adjusting it either up or down. In this manner the loop may readily be adjusted upon the pad skirt to bring the traces (which are inserted through the loop) into their proper height or position, which will, of course, differ with the height of various horses.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United StatesrIhe trace-carrier C, having xed end loops, D D, tongue a, and finger-recesses d, in oombination with the perforated strap B of the pad-skirt, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM S. YOUNG.
Witnesses:
JOHN H. MORGAN, CINTIN NIDAY.
