Description

lill
Wilnesses: Invenlom UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BELKNAP, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRUMS.
Specification forming part oi Letters Patent No. 150.8111, dated May 12, 1874; application tiled January 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErn BELKNAP, of Adrian, eounty of Lenawee and State of Miehigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in a drum having both the body and heads made of metal; and also in providing a drum, whether the heads aud body are made of metal or other material, with one or more sounding tubes passing from the upper head down through the lower head, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vert-ical section, of a drum embodying my invention.
A represents the body, B the upper head, and O the lower head, of a drum, all of which parts are made of polished steel, or any other suitable metal, and et' any dimensions desired.
A drum made of metal presents a handsome and neat appea 1anee; but the main objeet and advantage is, that it will produee a louder and sweeter sound than the drums in which sheepskin heads are used, because the metal heads have more ring to them.
In the drum are inserted one or more hollow tubes or soundingposts, D, the lower ends et' which pass through and are soldered to the lower head C. The tube or sounding-post extends then vertically up into the drum, and its upper end is soldered to the upper head B, as shown in Fig. 2 of the dra-wings. This hellow tube or tubes eause a louder and sweeter sound and more ring, as the vibrations pass down through it and out at the bottom. Each tube D is, within the drum, provided with. one or more holes, a, and the body A of the drum has also an aperture, b, on one side, as shown in Fig. 2.
rlhe hollow tubes or sounding-tubes I) may be applied to any drum, of whatever material it may be made.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I elaim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A drum having its body and head all made oi' metal, substantially for the purposes herein set forth.
2. One or more hollow tubes 0r soundingl
