UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGRET SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,237, dated January 1, 1884.
Application filed November 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARGRET SMITH, a resident of New York city and State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the horizontal line shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa section taken on the vertical line shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a similar View, with the parts in a different position.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in allthe figures.
The object of my invention is to furnish a file upon which to place papers-such as let-' ters, receipts, bills, 8tc.and to this end my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be first fully described hereinafter and then specifically claimed.
Referring .to the drawings by letter, A is a sheet of metal'such as brass, zinc, or tin which may be ornamented in any desired manner, as at a, and which may be of any desired configuration-such as oval, round, heartshaped, or, as shown, shaped as a shield. Near the upper end of this sheet is cutand stamped outward a part of the sheet, as at B,
this portion being bulged out frontward after shown in Fig. 1, having a rounded upper side, I), and lower side, I)", and leaving in the sheet, when stamped outward, as described, a hole, B., of the same configuration. A pin or spear, D, is secured to the sheet A at d, passing from the front through the perforation b, and prop erly secured by soldering or otherwise to the 5 rear thereof at d. Passing frontward, this spear D is coiled, as at d, and is turned upward andterminates in a point at d The operation of my device may be described as follows, viz: The device being hung up on a nail, hook, or screw, the head thereof engaging in the hole B, formed by stamping out ward the part B, and the spear being in the position shown in Fig. 4, (which is its normal position,) a paper of any kind which it is desired tofile away is placed on the spear, and, if desired, carried down and left on the horizontal portion thereof, when the point of the spear is pressed inward and to one side,as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thence passed under the point b of the part B, where it is held until again required for use.
From this description it may be seen that my device is simple, cheap, and effective.
The entire device contains only two pieces,
both of which may be made simply and cheaply, and which may be readily put together. The point of the spear is securely covered, when not in use, by the part B, and is ready for use when wanted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A paper-file constructed as described-that is to say, having a sheet, A, with stamped or bulged portion B, with points I) b", and leav- 7 5 ing a hole, B, in which the nail upon which the file is suspended is received, and having secured to it a pin or spear, D, having coil (2 and point (2 all constructed, combined, and operating as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' MARGRET SMITH.
