ABNER F. CALLISON AND'WILLIAM S. BING, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
STOCK-MARKER.
' SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 661,598, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed May 11, 1900.
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ABNER F. CALLISON and WILLIAM S. BING, citizens of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Stock-Marker, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to stock-markers; and the object of the same is to provide simple and efiective means for applying a marking tag or clip painlessly to the ears of stock for convenienceinidentifyingownershipof thesame and to easily secure the tag or clip in place in an expeditious manner and with certainty that it will not become accidentally disengaged.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an implement or tongs embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the improved implement or tongs. Figs. 3, and 4 are detail views of tags or clips adapted to 'be set by means of the improved implement or tongs.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate jaws having interfitting pivotal members 2 and 3 with rearwardly-projecting reins or handles 4, one of the latter having a spring 5 secured thereto and frictionally bearing against the other to keep the jaws normally spread apart. The j a'ws never close again against each other, and to prevent this operation the member 3 of the jaw 2 has a depending stop lug or projection 6 to bear against the contiguous portion of therein or handle below the same, and thereby bruising or other injury to the ear of the animal is avoided, and at the same time the tag or clip will be securely fastened. The upper jaw 1 is substantially rectangular in form and has an unbroken inner working face 7, and the jaw 2 has its upper working face formed with an elongated seat 8, constructed by recessing said jaw and providing a front shoulder 9 with an upsetting-recess 10 inward therefrom of concave form and which extends downwardly into the body of the jaw. This upsetting-recess 1 O serves to upset the one terminal of the tag or clip, particularly that form shown by Fig. 3, and the Serial No. 16,367. (No model-J seat holds the said tag or clip in proper position in the jaw 2 when applying the same to the ear of an animal. The outer end of the jaw 2 is continued into a curved guide extension 11, which has a downward trend to facilitate positioning the jaw under the ear of the animal and assist in properly positioning the tag on the ear of the animal, in view of the fact that it has a comparatively loose occupancy between the jaws, owing to the smooth character of the inner face of the upper one of the latter. I
The tag or clip 12 shown by Fig. 3 is the preferred form and is particularly designed for use with the implement shown and has a slot 13 at one end through which the reduced terminal of the opposite end of the device is forced and upset. The normal condition of this clip or tag is as shown, and the lower member thereof is disposed in the seat 8 of the jaw 2 and then pushed over the edge of the ear of the animal, the jaws 1 and 2 being then forced toward each other to cause the reduced terminal to pierce the ear and pass through the slot 13 for upsetting finish by means of the recess 10.
The winged tag or clip shown by Fig. at is applied in a manner similar to the form shown by Fig. 3.
is claimed as new is An implement of the character set forth, comprising a pair of jaws with interfitting pivoted members and handles, the upper jaw having an inner straight fiat working face, and the lower jaw formed with a seat with a front angular shoulder to receive a tag or clip and also having an upsetting-recess, the said lower jaw having a front downwardly-curved guide extension in advance of the outer terminal of the upper jaw.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
