Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. ARAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain, in the county of Pembina and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle-Openers, of which the following is a specification.

This invent-ion relates to pliers and more particularly to a tool for opening buckles.

The object of this invention is to construct a device of the character described which may readily open buckles which have become rusty and weatherworn, and which will be inexpensive to manufacture and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described,.and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device as applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation.

Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views, letter A denotes one arm of my improved buckle opener, and B a shorter arm which is pivoted thereto.

The arm A consists of a handle 1 having the large end 2 provided with the opening whereby the tool may be hung up when not in use, and the opposite end thereof is bent to form an arch 3, which terminates in an arm 4 having a recess 5 formed therein.

The arm A is provided with the aperture enlargement 6 in which is riveted a pin 7' of the arm B. The arm B is provided with a hook 8 at its extremity, the use of which will be hereinafter described.

In applying invention for opening buckles the recess 5 formed in the short arm l is placed on the roller or cross arm 1 of the buckle and the hook 8 of the shorter arm B is placed under the tongue 2 of the buckle, and by pushing on the handle A in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the tongue of the buckle may be readily removed from the opening in the strap.

Before applying this tool to a buckle the strap is first raised, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawing, to allow the tool to be placed in the center of the buckle. The arched portion 3 of the arm A is provided whereby the strap may be held in a raised position without interfering with the operation of the tool.

It is to be understood that other minor details of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the appending claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is:

1. A buckle opener comprising a long arm, a transversely arched portion continuing from one extremity thereof, said arched portion continuing beyond the longitudinal center of the arm and adapted for engagement with the cross bar of a buckle, a short arm pivoted to said first mentioned arm and terminating beyond the free end of said arched portion, and a hook formed at the free end of said short arm for engagement with the tongue of a buckle.

2. Abuckle opener comprising a long arm, a transversely arched portion continuing from one extremity of said arm and crossing the line of its longitudinal center adjacent its free end, said free end being recessed for engagement with the cross bar of a buckle, a short arm pivoted to said long arm adjacent the arched portion and extending in the same general direction as said long arm, the short arm being curved about the extremity of the arched portion, and a hook formed upon the end of said short arm for engagement with the tongue of a buckle, whereby a swing of the long arm will cause said hook to disengage the tongue from the strap, the free end of said strap being adapted to pass through said arched portion.
