CHECK-REIN HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3l3,l3l, dated March 3, 1885. Application filed January 8, 1885. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSHUA W. TRUSSELL, of Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Rein Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention is an improvement in a device for holding the check-rein of harness, commonly known as a water-hook.

It consists in forming a projection on the front of the tree of the harness-saddle and securing a post and guard upon such projection to hold the rein.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure is a perspective view representing my improvement in position on the saddle-tree. Fig. 2 represents the parts detached.

The saddle-tree is represented at A, and of course may be of any suitable construction. I attach to the front part thereof a projection, 0, having a screw-threaded opening through the center, as shown indotted lines in Fig. 1. This projection (J may be made separated from the saddle-tree and secured thereto, or it may be cast or made integral therewith in any suitable manner. Apost, a, of metal or any suitable material, ornamented in any desired manner, and having screwthreaded portion b, is secured to the part 0 by being screwed therein. This post has an upper flange, as shown alrc, which tends to keep the rein from slipping off in the tossing of the horses head.

In order to prevent the removal of the rein except by the positive action of the drivers hand, I provide a guard, as at e, which has a circular base, 1, and an upright portion, 2. The base 1 has a center hole and is adapted to be secured in place between the post a and the projection G, the screw-threaded portion of the former passing through the opening and holding it tightly against the projection G. The part 2 may be of spring metal or perfectly rigid, as desired, and is approximately parallel with the post a, being placed to the rear thereof in a suitable position to bear against the rein when in position. This part 2 curves slightly at the upper part, to-clear the flange at the post. This construction is very simple,

and can be made very cheaply, while at the same time it is very effective in use.

I do not limit myself to the material out of which the parts are made; nor do I limit myself to the precise shape shown, which may be changed without affecting the result.

I am aware that it has been proposed to place a check-rein holder upon a bridge-piece secured to the harness-saddle, the said holderbeing composed of a post and guard-plate, and I do not, therefore, broadly claim such construction.

What I claim is A checkrein holder consisting of the base 0, projecting from the front apex of the saddle-tree of which it forms a part or is directly connected thereto, the said base having a screw-threaded opening, a post provided with the'head c and neck a, and having its lower end adapted to the opening in the said base, and a guard-plate extending approximately parallel with the upright post and held between the post and the upper surface of the base, all substantially as described.
