Description

(No Model.)
J. R. NEWTON. GHEOKREIN HOOK.
Patented Mar. 4, 1890.
Wu 9 r PO. 0 y B,
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN RANKIN NEWTON, OF CARTHAGE, ILLINOIS.
CHECKRElN-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,433, dated March 4, 1890.
7 Application filed June 5, 1889. Serial No. 313,131 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RANKIN NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarthage, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Checkrein-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in checkrein-hooks; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved checkrein-hook in its operative position, and Fig. 2 is a side view of. the hook removed.
The frame of my improved hook consists of a single metallic plate bent into a U- shaped portion A, and having the lower arm of said U -shaped portion extendedbeyond the upper arm thereof and bent upward and over, as shown at B, and then extended forward above the upper arm to form the springtongue 0. The end of this spring tongue O is turned slightly upward, as shown at D, so that the checkrein may be easily inserted between the same and the U-shaped portion of the frame, and the end of the upper arm of said U-shaped portion is bent downward to form the lip E, which prevents the checkrein slipping from the device. P
Near the front end of the U-shaped portion A of the frame I arrange the vertical roller F, against which the checkrein bears, and on which it moves when the device is in use. The frame is further provided, in the lower arm of the U-shaped portion, with an opening G, through which a securing-bolt may be passed into the harness-saddle to secure the hook in position.
on the harnesssaddle, and the checkrein is inserted between the spring-tongue C and the upper arm of the U -shaped portion A of the frame and carried around so as to pass through the said U-shaped portion in advance of the lip E and bear upon the roller F. The checkrein will thus be securely held and prevented from escaping from the frame.
My improved checkrein-hook is very simple in its construction and can be manufactured and sold' at a slight cost. ing the vertical roller the horse will be allowed to move his head from side to side without causing excessive wearon the checkrein, and the rein will be effectually prevented from slipping from the hook by the lip E and by reason ofthe spring-tongue ex tending forward to the front end of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The improved checkrein -.hook consisting of a frame formed from a Single continuous strip bent to form an elongated U-shaped portion A, and the spring-tongue 0 above and. substantially parallel with the upper arm of said U-shaped portion, the said tongue being a continuation of the lower arm and the upper arm being provided with a downwardly-turned lip E at its inner end, and a vertically -disposed roller mounted in the front end of the U-shaped portion of the frame, asspecified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN RANKIN NEWTON.
