Be it known that I, FREDERIC PEMBERTON THOMPSON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Fredericton, in the Province of New Brunswick and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Oheckreinllolders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings,which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combined checkrein and breast-plate holder for harness.

Heretofore a checkrein holder has been constructedconsistin g of a vertical shank having two laterally-projecting arms or projections at its upper end, over which the checkrein is slipped, being provided with a longitudinal slit for that purpose, and securely held in place. In this construction the shank is rigidly secured to the harness-saddle, thus rendering it exceedingly difficult to insert the arms through the slit, necessitating the turning of the checkrein so as to bring the slit and the arms in line with each other.

The object of inyinvention is to obviate the above objection and to provide a checkreinholder in which the shank and arms can be turned or rotated, so as to admit of their ready insertion in the slot of a checkrein.

Itis also my object to provide a checkreinholder with a forwardly-projecting hook for engaging with a short strap connected with the sh oulder-strap of the breast band or strap, whereby the latter is prevented from coming in contact with the withers of the horse.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction and new combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined checkrein and breast-plate holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. at is an elevation of In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a horizontal plate having a circular aperture at its end, through which passes the securing-bolt. This bolt consists of the head 2, circular portion 3, angular part 4,

which engages with a corresponding aperture in the harness-saddle and is thus prevented from turning, and a screw-threaded portion 5,

adapted to receive a binding-nut 6, by which it is securely held in place. Integral with plate 1 is the vertical shank 7, inclining slightly backward and provided at its upper end with two transverse projecting arms 8. This plate 1 is also formed with a forwardly and downwardly projecting arm 9, having its end turned upwardly, forming a hook 10, which is adapted to engage with a short rearwardly-extending strap secured to the shoulder-strap of the breast-band, and thus retain the breast-strap in place.

The numeral 14 designates an ordinary strap, which is connected at one end with a checkrein and at the other end provided with a slit or aperture through which the arms 8 of the shank 7 pass.

The operation will be readily understood. When the device is secured to aharness-saddle by means of the securing-bolt, it is free to rotate on the circular portion, thus enabling it to be readily brought into line with thehorizontal slit or opening in the over-strap ot the checkrein for the purpose of inserting the shank therethrough. The arms 8 serve to retain the checkrein in place on the shank and prevent it from becoming accidentally displaced, and the hook 1O prevents the breaststrap from coming in contact with the withers of the horse. The checkrein can be readily detached by again turning the device to again bring the slit or opening in the rein in line with the transverse arms.

The device above described is simple, d urable, and effective, and possesses advantages, and is much superior to those now in use.

Having thus described. my invention, what I claim is- 1. A combined checkrein and shoulderstrap holder consisting of a plate adapted to be secured to a harness-saddle provided with a vertical shank having transversely-project ing arms at its upper end and a forwardly and 7 downwardly projecting arm having its end lar portion engaging with the opening in said plate, the angular portion adapted to engage with a corresponding opening in a harnesssaddle, the screw-threaded portion, and the binding-nut, substantially as described.
