VILLIAM A. LEE, OF l/VINFIELD, KANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,896, dated December 25, 1883.
7 Application filed July 31, 1883. (So model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LEE, of Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to plows, the object being to provide a plow of improved construction, whereby friction during the operation of the plow will be reduced to the minimum.
The invention consists of the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of an improved plow and beam constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 represent detail. views of one of the rear supporting arms and the journalbearing. Fig. 4 represents a side view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the same, and Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate sectional detail views.
A represents the plow attached to the lower end of the curved portion 6 of the beam B. The said lower end is formed flat or bladed, so as to bear against the under side of the front inclined edge, a, of the plow and be bolted thereto without materially increasing the bulk of the implement at that point, and also bracing and reenforcing the same at its lower edge. The plow A is also connected near its upper edge to the beam 13 by a curved bracket, 1), bolted thereto by bolts 22*. An angle-arm, O, is bladed and curved at its front vertically-inclined end, 0, to bear against and be secured to the rear side of the plow, near the point thereof, and is provided with bolt-holes formed in its horizontal portion e, to adapt it to be secured to the curved portion of the beam B at that point. The rear vertical portion of said arm 0 is enlarged and cut away to form a yoke, I), having vertical elongated slots d d at each side of the cut-away portion thereof. A second arm, E, is curved and bladed at its front end, e, to adapt it to be bolted to the mold-board of the plow, and extends back for a distance equal to that of the armO, where it terminates in a head,
0, having vertically-elongated slots e' similar to the slots of the yoke D. Blocks F F are bolted to the yoke D of the arm 0 and head a of the arm E by means of bolts f f, which pass through the elongated slots d d and e, and thus retain said blocks F F, by means of nuts f f. The said bearing-blocks F F are furthermore provided with a series of perforations, g, which are used in connection with the slots in the arms 0 and E, for effecting the necessary adjustment of said blocks. each provided on their inner sides with a vertical dovetailed groove, G, contracted toward their lower ends, so as to receive and retain the vertical extension H of a cylindrical journal-box, I. A shaft, J, bears in the central horizontal recess of the journal-box I, and is provided with a perforation, g, at its end nearest the arm E, through which a pin or key, h, is passed to prevent the longitudinal displacement of said shaft from within the journal-box I. The opposite end of the shaft J projects a short distance beyond the side of the arm 0, and carries at its extremity a flange-wheel, K, which is beveled on its outer face near its peripheral edge, the inner face of the same being concave or plane, as desired. The said flange-wheel K may be integral with or independently secured to the shaft J. The said flange-wheel is provided with a shoulder, i, which rests against or bears beneath the yoke D of the arm 0.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the plow' is rigidly secured to The blocks F F are the beam without augmenting the bulk of the implement, and that such connection is so arranged as to re-enforce the working faces and parts of the plow that aguide-disk is supported in therear of the plow to bear against the side of the furrow-kerf, and thus relieve the plow of the undue friction and pressure against the said kerf, caused by the weight'of the earth the plow is turning over. Moreover, the special construction of the shaft-bearing and the support therefor enables the disk to be quickly and easily applied in position, and the vertical adjustment of said journal with its shaft and disk readily effected. y
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 I have represented the supporting-arms O and E as being integral with a curved shoe or frog,
M, which is provided with perforations m, through which pass bolts m, threaded on their ends to engage threaded perforations therefor in the rear side of the 1nold-board of the plow.
Bolts N, projecting from the rear side of the curved portion of the frog m, and riveted to the same, are threaded 011 their ends to receive yoke-plates O, which are adapted to clamp and retain by means of nuts 0 the curved end of the beam.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a plow, of parallel arms arranged in rear of the mold-board and slotted for the attachment of removable blocks formed with dovetailed recesses, a cylindrical journal-box supported by said blocks, and a shaft secured in said journal-box and carrying at one end a guide-disk, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a plow or cultivator,
in position by bolts passing through theslots of 3 5 both arms for supporting the shaft of a guidedisk, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
