To all whmn it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, PETER MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Clair, in the county of St. Clair, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to plows, and more particularly to attachments therefor, and has for its object to provide an attachment which may be used in connection with any plow and which will prevent tilting of the implement when the latter is used on hillside land.

Another object is to provide an attachment which will be adjustable to suit different conditions.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific construction shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the attachment and a portion of the plowbeam, taken on line :20 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a plow including a beam 5, against the opposite sides of which there are disposed a pair of downwardly-extending members 6 and 7, respectively, the former having attachingbolts 8 engaged therein, which lie above and below'the beam 5 and member 7 and are engaged in a plate 9, disposed against the outer face of the last-named member. The bolts are provided with clamping-nuts 10, which may be tightened to hold the members against movement with respect to the beam or which may be loosened to permit of movement of the members both longitudinally of the beam and pivotally thereupon.

The outer face of the member 6 is longitudinally grooved, as shown at 11, and secured against this face of the member at the lower end thereof there is a block 12, which extends across the groove and which has a perforation 13 communicating with the latter.

Slidably disposed in the groove 11 there is a bar 14, having a longitudinally-arranged series of perforations 15, adapted for interchangeable registration with the passage 13 for the reception of a confining-pin 16, having a bifurcation 17 in its outer end in which is received a strap-spring 18, secured to the block 12 and which holds the pin yieldably against, disengagement from the registered passage and perforation. The upward movement of the bar 14 is limited by a block 19, carried by the inner face of this bar at the lower end thereof and which is disposed for engagement of the lower end of the member 6.

Engaged at one end in the block 19 and in the bar 14 there is an axle 20, which extends away from the plow-beam 5 and which has a sleeve 21 slidably mounted thereon for movement longitudinally thereof, a set-screw 22 being engaged in this sleeve and being adapted for operation to impinge against the axle 20 to hold the sleeve at difl'erent points of its movement. The sleeve has a shoulder 23 at its inner end, and revolubly engaged with the sleeve outwardly of this shoulder there is a wheel 25, which is held in position by a nut 24, engaged with the sleeve.

The member 7 extends downwardly somewhat beyond the member 6 and carries a block 26 at itslower end, extending at right angles thereto and in the. opposite direction to the axle 20. In its under face the block 26 has a longitudinally-extending dovetail groove 27, which is continued through the lower end of the member 7, and disposed for longitudinal sliding movement in this dovetail groove there is a dovetail bar 28, having a longitudinallyarranged series of perforations 29, adapted for interchangeable registration with a passage 30 formed in the block 26 for the reception of a confining-pin 31, which is bifurcated similarly to the pin 16, a spring 32 being provided which operates after the manner of the spring 18 to hold the pin 31 in operative condition, the spring 32 being secured to the block 26. The groove 11 and bar 14 are also of dovetail shape in cross-section, as shown.

The bar 28 carries a spindle 33 at its outer end upon which there is journaled a wheel 34,

which is somewhat larger than the wheel 35.

It will thus be apparent that the attachment is susceptible of various adjustments to suit pieces of ground of different slants.

What is claimed is- 1. A plow attachment comprising vertical members adapted for disposal at opposite sides of a plow-beam, means for detachably connecting the members with the plow-beam, said means being constructed and arranged for operation to permit of movement of the members longitudinally of the plow-beam and pivotally thereupon at times, one of said members extending downwardly below the other, a laterally-extending block carried by the downwardly-extending member and lying below the plow-beam, a horizontally-extending bar slidably mounted in the block for longitudinal movement, said bar extending away from the plow-beam, means for holding the bar at different points of its movement, a wheel revolubly mounted upon the outer end of the bar, avertically-extending bar-slidably engaged in the other member for movement longitudinally thereof, said bar extending beyond the lower end of said member, means for holding the bar at different points of its movement, means for limiting the upward movement of the bar, a laterally-extending axle carried by said bar and lying below the plow-beam, a sleeve mounted upon the axle for movement longitudinally thereof, means for holding the sleeve at different points of its movement and a wheel revolubly mounted upon the sleeve, said wheel being smaller than the first-named wheel.

2. A plow attachment comprising verticallyextending members adapted for attachment at opposite sides of a plow-beam and to extend therebelow, one of said members having a vertically-extending groove in its outer face, a bar slidably engaged in the groove, an outwardly-extending axle carried by the lower end of the bar, a wheel rotatably mounted upon the axle and arranged for movement longitudinally thereof, means for holding the wheel at different points of its last-named movement, means for holding the bar at different points of its vertical movement, an out- Wardly-extending block carried by the lower end of the other member and having a longitudinally-extending groove in its lower face, a bar slidably engaged in the groove, means for holding the second bar at different points of its movement and a Wheel carried by the outer end of the second bar.

3. An attachment for plows comprising two members adapted for attachment to opposite sides of a plow-beam and to extend vertically therebelow, one of said members having a dovetail groove in its outer face extending longitudinally thereof, a dovetail bar slidably engaged in the groove, a block secured over the groove at the lower end of the member and having a passage formed therethrough and communicating with the groove, said bar having a longitudinally-arranged series of perforations adapted for interchangeable engagement with the passage, a pin removably engaged in the passage and one of the perforations, a spring secured to the block and arranged to hold the pin yieldably in its justnamed position, an outwardly-extending axle carried by the lower end of the bar, a wheel mounted upon the axle for rotary movement and for movement longitudinally of the axle, means for holding the wheel at dilferent points of its last-named movement, an outwardly-extending blockcarried by the lower end of the other member and having a longitudinally-extending dovetail groove in its lower face and a passage communicating with the groove and opening through'the upper face of the second-named block, a second dovetail bar slidably engaged in the last-named groove and having a longitudinally-arranged series of perforations adapted for interchangeable engagement with the second-named passage, a pin removably engaged in the secondnamed passage and one of the perforations, a spring carried by the second-named block and arranged to hold said pin yieldably in its lastnamed position and a wheel removably mount+ 1e)d upon the outer end of the second-named In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
