Be it known that I, RUDOLPH J. ALTGELT, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows and more particularly to those of the small gang plow type,--the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means for raising and lowering the plow beams and their soil engaging parts.
Vith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a front view partly broken away.
1 represents an axle-section provided at one end with a cranked portion 2 for the accommodation of a furrow wheel 3. To the other end of the axle-section 2, a sleeve 4 is secured and providedat one side with a vertical sleeve portion 5 having an angular bore for the reception of the angular vertical portion 6 of an axle-section 7 mounted in the hub of a land wheel 8. The sleeve 4 is adjustably secured to the axle-section 1 by means of a set screw 9, and the vertical portion 6 of the axle-section 7 is adjustably secured inthe sleeve portion 5 by means of a set screw 10.
The forward po-rtion of a plow beam 11 extends over the axle-section 1 and provided at its rear end with soil engaging parts 12. A bracket 13 is secured to the rear portion of the beam 11 and serves to space from said beam, another plow beam 14 alsoprovided at its rear end with soil engaging parts 15. The forward portion of the beam 14 is bent toward the beam 11 and its front end which lies parallel with said beam 11 is securely bolted to the latter. A caster axle 16 is mounted in a suitable bearing at the rear end of the 4beam 14 and carries a caster wheel 1,7 which trails behind the soil engaging part- 15.
An upright box or guide 18 is secured to the plow beam 11 for the accommodation of a vertically movable standard 19,*the latter being secured to the axle-section 1 by means of a suitable clamping device 20. A lever 21 is pivotally connected rearwardly of its forward end to the standard 19 near the upper en d of the latter and for the purpose of providing adjustment for this pivotal connection, the standard may be provided with a plurality of holes such as shown at 22. The forward end or short arm of the lever 21 is connected, by means of a link or rod 23 with the forward portion of the plow beam 11 and the long arm of said lever is adapted to engage (when said lever is in its lower position) a latch 24 secured to the bracket 13.
IVhen the parts are in the positions shown in full lines in Fig. 2, with the lever 21 engaging the latch 24, the plow beams and their soil engaging parts will be elevated and when the lever is in the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, the soil engaging parts will be in working position.
A. handle 25 is secured to the plow beam 14.
It will be observed that the fulcrum of the lever 21 is supported, through the medium of the standard 19, by the axle section 1 and that the forward end of said lever is connected with the forward portion of the beam 11 by means of the link or rod 23. It is thus apparent that when said lever is lowered from the dotted line position to the full line position shown in Fig. 1, the beams and their soil engaging parts will be raised,-the guide-box 18 secured to the beam 11 sliding upwardly on the standard 19. For the purpose of lowering the plows to working position, the lever will be raised until the pivotal connection between the up per end of link 23 and lever 21 has passed a line passing through the pivotal connection of said link with the beam 11 and the pivotal connection of the lever 21 with the' standard 19. In this manner, the so-il en gaging parts will be locked in their working positions.
Having fullydescribed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a plow, the combination with an axle and wheels, of a plow beam extending forwardly over the axle, a standard secured to the axle and having sliding connection with the beam, a lever pivoted between itsfendsV to the standard, and a link pivotally conneoted with the forward end of said lever and with the beam forwardly of the standard, whereby when said lever is raised the pivotal connection between the forward end of said lever and the upper end of said link v will pass rearwardly of a line passing through the pivotal Connection between the l lever and the standard and the pivotal con- Copies of this patent may be obtained foi` tive cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
