' ATTORNEY v THE NORRIS PETERS C0" PHDTO-LITHO" WASHINGYUN. D C.
. EDWARD MAURER, OF FREELAND, MICHIGAN.
runnow-eaenron PLOWS.
riaagsvo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD'MAURER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeland, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F urrow- Gages for Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plows and pertains more particularly to a device adapted to .be attached to a plow, whereby various widths of furrows may be obtained by means v of a gage or guide wheel secured to the plow beam, and the improvement pertains more particularly to means for mounting and op erating the gage wheel, whereby it may be raised and lowered, or moved laterally toward or from the plow beam, to increase or decrease the depth of the furrow and to change the width of the furrow without rendering it necessary for the operator to leave his seat to effect these adjustments.
With these and certain other objects in view which will appear later in the specifications, my invention comprises the devices described and claimed and the equivalents thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view, partly in section, of a plow embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the two views showing respectively, by dotted lines, the lateral adjustment of the gage wheel and its vertical adjustment.
As is clearly shown in the drawing, 1 indicates the land-side, 2 the mold-board, 3 the beam, and 4; the gage wheel, by which the depth and width of the furrow are gaged.
5 is the drivers seat. The gage wheel I is secured to a vertically movable rod 6 which is slidable in a hollow sleeve 7. Pivotally secured to the rod 6 at a point above the sleeve 7 is an arm 8,
the lower end of which is pivoted at 9 to a handle 10 that extends rearwardly in proximity to the drivers seat. The forward end of the handle 10 is pivoted at a point 11 to a lug 12 formed integral with the sleeve 7, as shown in Fig. 2. By raising or lowering the handle 10 the gage wheel 4 can be raised or lowered indicated in Fig. 2.
To efiect the lateral adjustment of gage by the driver, as
Application filed March a, 1915. Serial No. 13,095.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent-13d J uric 2%, I915.
jecting laterally therefrom is a horizontally dlsposed bar 13, upon which is slidably mounted a horizontal sleeve 14 preferably formed integral with the vertical sleeve 7. A link 15 is pivoted atone end to the housing formed by the combined sleeves 7 and 14, the other end of the link being pivoted to an L-lever 16, as shown in Fig. 1. The L-lever is pivotally mounted at 17 to a bracket 18 that is carried by the beam 3. Pivotally secured to the free end of the L-lever 16 is a horizontally disposed connecting rod 19, the rear end of which is pivoted to the lower part of an upright lever 20, which is'pivotally mounted on a bracket 21. A movement of the lever 20 forward or away from the driver moves the sleeves 14c and 7 and the wheel 4 toward the beam 3 to set the gage wheel for a narrow furrow, and the opposite movement of the lever 20 sets the wheel 4 farther away from the beam 3, to produce a wider furrow. To hold the lever 20 and wheel I in their properly adjusted positions, I provide a detent 22 and a notched quadrant 23, the latter being carried by the bracket 21.
While I have shown and described a spe cific arrangement of links and levers between the operators lever 20 and the wheel 4, it will be understood that I do not desire to confine myself to the exact arrangement shown, but any other equivalent arrangement of connecting devices maybe employed to produce the desired adjustment of the wheel 4.
It will be noted that the combined sleeves 7 and 14, which are preferably formed in one piece, carry not only the device for vertically adjusting the wheel, but also form the means by which the wheel is made capable of lateral adjustment.
By the means above described, I have produced a simple, compact, strong and inexpensive device whereby all the desired and necessary adjustments of the gage wheel 4 can be accomplished by the driver without moving from his seat, and if desired, while the plow is in motion.
tally disposed bar fixed to the forward part of the plow beam and projecting laterally therefrom, of a sleeve slidingly mounted on said bar, a second vertically disposed sleeve formed integral with said first-mentioned sleeve, a vertical rod slidably mounted in said vertical sleeve, means carried by said sleeve and secured to said rod to raise and lower said rod, a gage wheel carried by the lower end of said rod, an operating lever located Within reach of the driver, and means connecting said operating lever and G'opies of this patent may be obtained for five cents said horizontally disposed sleeve adapted to move said sleeve along said bar to effect lateral adjustment. of said wheel toward and from the beam of the plow, for the purposes set forth;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
EDWARD MAURER.
